The Fredericton Music Society is to be congratulated for the stunning success in launching world-class concert pianist, Ludmila Knezkova, whose performance of a boldly unconventional program brought cheers and a standing ovation both at intermission and conclusion of her concert. Musical Views, Prague, Czech Republique Saturday evening's performance was so powerful and emotional that it actually moved some audience members to tears. That's not surprising. After all, this same music once had monarchs and czars reaching for their handkerchiefs. Even though there were no crowned heads in Saturday evening's audience, Ms Knezkova-Hussey gave a performance fit for a king.

Extractions: Watch a clip from "Flying on the Moon: The Ludmila Story" Watch a clip from "Six Possibilities" FLYING ON THE MOON: THE LUDMILA STORY ON OPENING NIGHT, JANUARY 16 Flying on the Moon: The Ludmila Story is a performance documentary that tells the remarkable tale of classical Czech pianist Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey, who fell in love with and married a supervisor at a local paper mill in Bathurst, a small town in New Brunswick. She gave up performing on the great stages of Europe, and settled into her in-laws' farmhouse on the Bay of Chaleur. With indomitable spirit, Knezkova-Hussey has put New Brunswick on the world's classical music map by rebuilding her career and starting a renowned piano competition. The documentary airs on CBC Television's OPENING NIGHT on Thursday, January 16 at 7 p.m. Knezkova and Hussey's meeting and marriage is a classic love story. Neither spoke each other's language, so they communicated by sign language and a dictionary, and after a two-year courtship, they wed. Knezkova's transition from glamourous life to that of a new mother in a small town was not an easy one. What Knezkova-Hussey needed to survive in Bathurst was a dose of European culture. In characteristic fashion, she decided to bring that culture to her new hometown. So began a piano competition that has made Bathurst a musical magnet for some of the world's most talented young pianists, and a desirable destination for some of the world's best orchestras. The Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey International Piano Competition began in 1993, with musicians from the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec. Since then, the competition has been open to young musicians from around the world and in 2002 there were 19 competitors and the closing concert was a performance by the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.
