Extractions: BUY NOW AmazonUK AmazonUS Recordings by Evgeny Kissin are always eagerly awaited. On paper, this programme should work well: the Mussorgsky is true virtuoso fare; the Bach/Busoni is born out of the Romantic tradition; the Glinka/Balakirev from the self-same Russian line as the Mussorgsky. The Bach/Busoni of 1900 is an enormous conception (nearly twenty minutes long). One cannot but admire the technical aspects of Kissins performance: the sterling fingerwork; the clear laying-out of part-writing. Yet it was Busoni himself that referred to this work as majestic, rich in feeling and bold and Kissin does indeed miss the grandeur inherent in this piece. Fortes can be harsh (there is a subito forte around 517 which is just uncomfortable), and the effect is highlighted by the bright recording. The Fugue is the best, with an impressive build-up to the climax, almost as if Kissin wanted the listener to forget the Toccata and the Adagio.

Barbican Centre, 17 April 2000 It is always fascinating to compare pianists in standard fare, but when the pianists are Kissin and Kempf the task is immeasurably more interesting. Evgeny Kissin, now 30, has already established a reputation as one of the most brilliant pianists of our time, and Freddy Kempf, 22, is well on his way to becoming one of the most perceptive and masterly of the younger generation. Their styles differ enormously. Kissin is often aloof, his playing almost crystalline in its beauty, a geometricist who choreographs from the keyboard like a landscape painter. Kempf is almost the antithesis of this, a pianist who establishes a kineticism with his audience as he draws from the keyboard a divinely crafted set of miniatures. With Kissin one is tempted to say we get the overall picture rather blandly presented, with Kempf an asyntactic canvas, not quite complete, but with quite spellbinding moments of insight and luminosity. The tension and austerity of the opening of Beethoven's op.37 were not quite as they should have been in Kissin's RFH concert. The arpeggio and the descending scale were poorly articulated by

Extractions: What the Papers said: Kissin showed many flashes of brilliance, but he seemed to be immersed in his own private world, while Davis and the BBCSO tried valiantly to guess his next move. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH Instead of world-weary romanticism, his [Kissin's] performance revealed a monstrous, snarling side to Brahms, even if the music, and the audience, had to be trampled into submission to achieve it. EVENING STANDARD Concert Reviews: Index for July's Concerts Index for August's Concerts Index for September's Concerts What YOU said: I approached the first half of this prom with some trepidation - I had never heard the Froissart overture which it began with and the second piece - Anthony Payne's Visions and Journeys was a World Premiere. On this performance, I would hope it was its last. Payne's self indulgence was akin to watching a child thumping a piano, writ large onto the orchestra. The Journey aluded to in the title was nowhere to be seen - disjointed sections of tuneless passage play were the order of the day.

Extractions: Saturday. March 29, 1997 THE PIANIST Evgeny Kissin propelled himself stiffly onto the stage of Avery Fisher Hall on Thursday, looking rather as if his joints needed oiling. He dutifully bent his mouth into a labored and momentary smile, gave a quick jerk of his torso in lieu of a bow, and then sat at the piano where, in an instant, all his discomfort melted into power and control. Watching the awkward young pianist plunge into music was like seeing a seal slip into water, and in the 40 mesmerizing minutes that followed, Kissin gave one of the most lissome and lyrical performances of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 that I have ever heard. Kissin has made a specialty of playing the same concerti every other pianist does, but he is alone in his ability to make the commonplace seem rare. There was not a trill that came off as filler or a scale run that sounded formulaic in this performance, and he made the rhetorical flourishes that open the concerto so intensely poetic that by the time the first theme arrived in the orchestra, the musical argument seemed almost already complete.

With his trademark waft of wavy hair, he quickly walks on stage, takes several distinguished bows, and immediately seats himself. It's very poised and dramatic, yet at the same time it foreshadows just a fraction of the fire and authority he produces while moving his fingers. More fireworks followed the intermission: an evocative, dramatic, and at times touching reading of Alexander Scriabin's seldom-heard 3rd Sonata. Kissin seemed even more confident here than when playing the Rachmaninov, especially in the last two movements. After a thoughtful transcription of Rachmaninov's
