Extractions: Refinance now homeowner even if you have bad credit. 185 loc No doubt about it. He's an odd bloke. There's the huge mass of wiry black hair on top of the inscrutable doll-like face, the automaton walk from the wings to the piano and the clockwork-toy bow ("Is this Sparky and his Magic Piano?'). He seems uncomfortable with his body until, that is, he sits at the piano and plays. And then another person takes over, expansive, flexible, powerful, awesome. You can love him or hate him as a pianist but it is impossible to remain indifferent. In concert and on disc he can thrill you, exasperate you, move you to tears and puzzle you. In other words, he can touch you. A great gift. I did the homework for our interview as if he'd been the Duke of Edinburgh. "Arrive at 7.10", I'd been told (not 7.05 or 7.15.) A perfunctory handshake, a chilly smile. "So, let's start please" are his brisk first words to me. Interviews, one feels, are a necessary evil usually conducted by idiots who have to be endured. Or does the nervous facial tick and awkward formality of his body language indicate a lack of confidence with strangers, an anxiety not to say the wrong thing? Whatever, boy is he tense. (Though he does drink, he declined my invitation to join me in a large whisky.) He is taller and more impressive in the flesh than the diffident stripling on stage and with a deeper voice than you'd expect. I begin by asking him what is the most boring question he gets asked. (An amused look. Good.) " 'How many hours do you practice every day'," he replies. "That's the worst."

Extractions: A house concert featuring world-renowned pianist Evgeny Kissin in an extraordinary penthouse apartment... who could ask for a better holiday gift Almost 100 people treated themselves to this extraordinary event on December 16, 1999 at a private home in New York City. Patrons enjoyed cocktails and hors d'eouvre early on, followed by a performance of Rachmaninoff's Études-tableaux, Op. 39 and Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14, Balakirev's Islamey, and three encores. A full-scale sit-down dinner and the opportunity to meet the charming, 28-year-old pianist topped-off the evening. As well as being a great artistic success, this concert was also a great financial success, netting over $80,000. Christopher Nupen On November 3, Classical Action invited its Maestros and other generous supporters to an intimate evening of music and film as our way of saying "Thank you" for their continuing commitment. Documentary filmmaker Christopher Nupen premiered a specially edited version of his two new films on the extraordinary pianist Evgeny Kissin, hosted by BMG Classics. By showing aspects of music making that are not generally accessible even to the concert-going public, Mr. Nupen was able to share with our guests a more personal side of Mr. Kissin, who was also in attendance. André Watts has been at the forefront of Classical Action's fundraising efforts since we first opened our doors. He stepped up to the fundraising plate yet again, this time performing a private house concert on October 17th for our benefit in Philadelphia. Chinese pianist Lang Lang, who stole the show at the Ravinia Festival in 1999 as a last-minute replacement for Mr. Watts, garnered similar acclaim for his performance at a Classical Action house concert on November 7th. Taking place just outside Philadelphia in Reading, PA, Lang's concert also benefited Rainbow Home of Berks County.

Extractions: Daily Arts Writer Beethoven, Brahms and Liszt, all great composers of the past, will visit Hill Auditorium tonight with a promise of perfection. Their piano pieces will be delivered by an artist whom Anton Nel, an associate professor of piano at the School of Music, calls "one of the greatest talents of the century." Evgeny Igorevich Kissin, an improviser on the piano at the age of three, received international attention when, at 12, he performed Chopin's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the Moscow Philharmonic. He was the child prodigy of the piano world, in his youth listening to recordings and replaying the music he heard by memory. He is now 26, and still growing as an artist and performer. Pianist Evgeny Kissin appears at Hill Auditorium tonight. Born in Moscow, Kissin grew up with the Russian piano tradition, familiar with former greats Anton Rubinstein and Vladimir Horowitz. He plays in the Romantic tradition, and, New York Times critic Harold Schonberg argues, with "constant, delicately applied fluctuations of tempo, held under a perfect synthesis of emotional and intellectual control." Kissin's talents have taken him all over the world, in cities like Berlin, Budapest and Boston. His 1990 debut at Carnegie Hall was a sold-out affair, producing a recording that earned him a Grammy Award nomination.

Extractions: By Michael A. Lewanski, Jr. Coupling Beethoven's earliest piano concerto with his last, pianist Evgeny Kissin and conductor James Levine emphasize the difference between Beethoven's earlier and later styles with remarkable aplomb. No. 5, by contrast, is played with all possible pomp. The opening cadenzas and their return in the recapitulation are deservedly impressive as played by Kissin, and Levine gets a fiery, energetic sound from the Philharmonia. It is worth mentioning that there are several unstylistic tempo changes in the first movement, but when played so convincingly, they seem justified. The second movement contains some wonderfully sensitive playing from the orchestra and and great sense of direction on Kissin's part, which also occasionally disrupts the movement's serenity occasionally. The obviously contrasting last movement is played with a sustained energy not often heard in contemporary performances of Beethoven, and the famous finale does not sound like the stereotype it often does, but has a genuine heroic quality. Altogether, this is a wonderful release which will take its place among the greatest of these concertos'
