Extractions: Freddy Kempf needs no introduction. But the Kempf trio may be a new name for many. Together with two prize-winning friends - the French violinist Pierre Bensaid and the Armenian cellist Alexander Chaushian, Freddy Kempf formed a piano trio that has already become very well known in the UK and is just beginning to establish its reputation abroad. For this disc they have chosen a programme that suits their temperaments superbly: Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. In spite of the problems of balancing the three instruments, the piano trio has attracted some of the greatest composers to produce inspired works Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms come to mind. Tchaikovsky's piano trio was written in memory of the Russian pianist and conductor Nicholas Rubinstein. The composer seems to have been more inspired than inhibited by his illustrious predecessors and he produced a work which is extraordinarily rich in emotion; as well as strikingly beautiful. Listening to the Kempf Trio performing this great work is, quite simply, a very moving experience. (If there is anyone who thinks that chamber music is an emasculated form of the real thing they should certainly listen to this performance which is full of passion and rich in colours!) With this disc the Kempf Trio seem set to cause quite a stir. Price: Sek.145

Extractions: Carlos Kalmar and the Grant Park Symphony have made a practice of bringing little-known works into the repertory. This is a fine principle and should be applauded, even when it doesn't quite work. On the other hand, it also introduced the young British pianist Freddy Kempf, who was a knockout. Kempf's playing of the Beethoven Concerto No. 4 in G Major placed him high on the bring-'em-back list. The Pfitzner work was the composer's overture to "Das Kaetchen von Heilbronn," or "Katie from Heilbronn," a 1905 play by Heinrich von Kleist. It left unanswered the question "Why play this?" The overture is a disorganized scrapbook of a work with no distinct personality; there's a bit of Berlioz, a touch of Mendelssohn, some over-sweetened Donizetti, but no recognizable structure. Kalmar's conducting looked enthusiastic and the orchestra played well, but they couldn't give this piece what it hasn't got. Kempf, 24, has made a worldwide reputation since his popular success at the 1988 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. It was easy to see why.
