Extractions: The state automobile license tag slogan - "Stars Fell On Alabama" refers to one of the largest meteor showers to be observed in the United States. The large meteor shower that pounded fire and brimstone over Ala bama on November 13, 1833 is forever logged in history as "the night the stars fell." Over 200,000 meteors per hour shot through the sky that night. This historic event was the inspiration for the 1934 hit song, "Stars Fell On Alabama." Jimmy Buffett (who grew up on the Eastern Shore of Mobile) later redid the song and plays it at all of his concerts. February is a special time for learning about the contributions of African-Americans at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. During this workshop, teachers are educated on the neat ways to incorporate African-American scientists into the existing curriculum. Workbooks are provided as well as how-to demonstrations on appropriate experiments. 8 a.m.-noon. Contact Ahmad Ward, 205-328-9696, ext. 234

Most of it is lost, and Robert King and Hyperion have been performing a great service by bringing us the 50 or so compositions that remain. This Volume 7 of their "Sacred Music" series offers five rarely heard works, all of them displaying Vivaldi's characteristic genius with their long and lovely vocal lines, skillfully written choruses, and ingenious and imaginative orchestration. Kasman made his U.S. debut at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, in which he was awarded the silver medal. His burgeoning career includes concert appearances throughout the world with frequent recording projects. In 1996 he received the Grand Prix de la Nouvelle Academy du Disque Francais for his recording of the complete Prokofiev piano sonatas. Kasman is on the faculty at the Music College of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 1992 at age 19, American guitarist Jason Vieaux became the youngest first-prize winner in the history of the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Competition. Vieaux will perform at Bluffton College Thursday, Nov. 16. Vieaux, also a prize winner in the 1996 Naumburh International Guitar Competition in New York, is on the guitar department faculty of The Cleveland Institute of Music. One reviewer wrote, "The name Jason Vieaux sounds French, his playing sounds Latin American! This young man has the right feeling for rhythm, his performing technique leaves nothing to be desired, and his interpretation makes one melt."

Extractions: Soovin Kim was only twenty years old when he captured first prize at the Niccolo Paganini International violin Competition in 1996. He was the first American in twenty-four years to receive this distinction. As a result, he was given the honor of playing one concert on "Il Cannone," Paganini's rarely played violin. One year later, he received the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award, leading to recital and orchestral engagements across Europe. He was again honored in 1998 with the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In addition to his activities as a soloist, Mr. Kim is in great demand as a most versatile chamber musician. In February of this year, he was heard on "Performance Today", the well regarded NPR show with guitarist Jason Vieaux. He is a member of the Johannes Quartet and the string trio, "Divertimento." He regularly collaborates with the great musicians of the world such as pianists Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida, violinist Pamela frank, and members of the Guarneri Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio. He frequently participates in the Marlboro Festival in Vermont and tours the U.S. as part of the acclaimed "Musicians from Marlboro" program. He is also a member of Lincoln Center's chamber Music Society II.

Extractions: Van Cliburn Foundation In order to learn what direction their careers have taken since participating in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Van Cliburn Foundation recently asked all finalists of the first ten competitions to send us information about their current activities. The following summary, culled from their responses, continues to support our belief that ranking needs to be attenuated, that only rarely does one pianist emerge head and shoulders above all the others, and that the group that surfaces at the end of a competition represents the collective and subjective preference of the jury during a specific point in time without an implicit suggestion of one finalist being better than another. A close examination of the depth and diversity of accomplishments achieved by the majority of our past winners helps to expand our traditional definition of success as it applies to forging a career in music. Laureates of the Cliburn Competition may have developed careers without the benefit of the competition. However, it is more than likely that the springboard offered by the competition helped to open a few doors that otherwise may have remained closed for a while. The success of our laureates should not, in any case, be measured solely by performing regularly at Carnegie Hall. The handful of pianists who do so remains a small oneMurray Perahia, Evgeny Kissin, Maurizio Pollini, Krystian Zimerman, and one or two others including Radu Lupu, a Cliburn gold medalist. But there are literally thousands of orchestra and recital presenters the world over who require pianists for live performances, for which the superstars cannot possibly be available, affordable, or even desirable. As Rildia Bee OBryan Cliburn used to say, There is no one preacher who can deliver all sermons.
