Audiences and critics alike hail the intensity and artistry he brings to the works of masters ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Boulez and Bolcom. The Washington Post, for instance, deems Taylor "one of the most impressive young pianists on the horizon today." Extractions: By Julie Lane He's arguably Eastern Long Island's most charismatic and controversial political figure a man friend and foe alike speak of in many of the same terms used to describe former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. For the past several months, The Suffolk Times has been interviewing colleagues, former colleagues, appointees and village residents for a broad portrait of 52-year-old Mayor David Kapell. Beginning today and running for the next three weeks. David Kapell's story will be told by his friends, his foes and himself. (After initially declining the newspaper's requests for an interview. he recently sat down for a lengthy discussion of his background, achievements and goals, and to answer his critics.) Part I looks at his early years, including his life before Greenport, and the period leading up to his election as mayor in 1994. "I've worked with people that I've fought with tooth and nail and I'm prepared to do it again if it's for the good of the village," said Mayor Kapell, defining his approach to governing this one-mile-square municipality. New York City born and bred, he moved to the village in 1978 determined to live in a place where he could raise a family without the stresses and strains attendant to city living. Having summered in East Hampton in his youth, he had some familiarity with the village. He saw it as a place of opportunity where he could ply his skills as a handyman.

Extractions: Pris 59,75 (vejl.) I n this, the second volume of Naxos Historicals survey of the art of the pianist William Kapell, all the works are by the towering genius of twentieth century pianism, the Russian composer, conductor and pianist Sergei Rachmaninov. Both the concerted works are not only the most popular by Rachmaninov, but also stand among the finest works in the genre written during the last century. Kapell, with his virtuoso technique and innate musicality, was ideally suited to this repertoire. He delivers blistering performances that never for a minute surrender the intensity of the live performance to the clinical perfection of the recording studio, yet at the same time have a perfection rarely equalled. His readings combine astounding technical security with great depth of feeling, both characteristics also of his performance of the much-loved Prelude in C sharp minor, the work that effectively launched Rachmaninov as a household name throughout the musical world. A further point of interest with these recordings is the accompanying orchestra. The Robin Hood Dell Orchestra was in fact the Philadelphia Orchestra, using the name associated with its summer concert seasons. Conducting the Orchestra, which had the closest relationship of all with Rachmaninov, are two of the towering maestri of post-war American musical life, William Steinberg and Fritz Reiner. As might be expected, the results are of the highest calibre.

Extractions: he piano was by far Prokofiev's favorite instrument. He was a formidable pianist in his own right, premiering most of his works in concert halls around the world. Fortunately, many of the greatest pianists of the 20th century were drawn to Prokofiev's compositions as well. Two Russian pianists who knew Prokofiev and premiered his later piano sonatas stand tallest in the pantheon of great interpreters of Prokofiev's piano works Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. As with the great conductors of today who specialize in Prokofiev's works, there are a number of young pianists who rival the greats of yesterday. Several pianists have recently completed recording the entire Prokofiev piano cycle including Boris Berman (on Chandos), Frederic Chiu (on Harmonia Mundi), and Oleg Marshev (on Danacord). Also not to be missed is Barbara Nissman , who was the first to record the complete piano sonatas to commemorate Prokoifev's 100th birthday in 1991 her sonata cycle remains one of the towering achievements of the last twenty years for Prokofiev lovers.
