Well-documented both in Sweden and abroad, Jovell is among an important group of performers who are seen to represent his country's musical and cultural foresight. With a deep understanding of tradition and innovation, Jovell's musicianship reflects skilful comprehension and a modern attitude towards both the past and the present. As an innovator, and with the aim of presenting Swedish musical excellence to audiences abroad, Patrick Jovell founded the Wasa Soloists ensemble, in 1990. The ensemble, which consists of six hand-picked, Swedish instrumentalists, all of whom are international solo performers in their own right, apperars in various combinations to allow creative interpretations of the duo, trio, quartet, quintet and sextet repertoire. The aims of the ensemble have recently made it possible to include more visits by foreign guests and a number of composers have written music directly for the members of the ensemble. Since making his debut at the age of seventeen, Patrick Jovell has studied under Professor Hans Pålsson at the State Conservatory of Music in Malmö and, as a winner of several major scholarships, at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has studied privately with pianist Garrick Ohlsson in San Francisco and New York and attended Master classes with Hans Leygraf, Robert Riefling, Henryk Szeryng, Anna Moffo, André Previn and Pierre Boulez. Recitals, chamber music and engagements as a guest soloist with various orchestras have taken him all over Scandinavia, Europe, USA and Asia and future invitations include Russia and South America. As a winner of grants from the French government, Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Wallenberg Foundation, Jovell was during 1994-96 invited to continue his doctoral studies at the internationally renowned IRCAM in Paris. Jovell has been invited to collaborate in productions with the Swedish Broadcasting Commission and CD recordings of piano music by Alexander Scriabin are planned for the near future. Jovell's interest in contemporary music has also resulted in works being written directly for him by the composers Gammelgård, Kovár, Harrison and Olofsson.
