Extractions: June 9, 1997 The renegades: The Jon Nakamatsuan Jiracek fan club stood outside during intermission and critiqued their performance. It seems the quartet of TCUliburn Institute piano students has not only spelled out Nakamatsu's name on posterboard, but has been initiating the rhythmic clapping after Jiracek's performances. "It was too fast," Peter Van Beck, 23, of Kalamazoo, Mich., said after they led the convention center crowd in clapping for the German pianist. Van Beck has apparently given rhythmic clapping a lot of thought. "It's got to be very steady, slow. It's just mixed in too much if it's too fast." Van Beck paused, then looked over at his cohort, Jason Kwak, 25, of Austin. "Hey, it could be done for Nakamatsu," he said. Kwak took a long pull from his cigarette as he contemplated the suggestion. "Yeah, it could be," he said. "But I'd rather just yell." An apple for the teacher: In the upper balcony last night, Jon Nakamatsu's longtime teacher punctuated every beat with a shake of her beehived head. "She played with him," said Gene Todd, 71, an Arlington homemaker and music lover with a clear view of Marina Derryberry's blond 'do.

Extractions: Sunday, June 9, 1997 Californian is 1st U.S. pianist to get gold medal in 16 years FORT WORTH Without conservatory training or even a degree in music, Californian Jon Nakamatsu took the top prize Sunday at the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The 28-year-old high school German teacher becomes the first American in 16 years to wear a gold medal in the quadrennial event. No one seemed more stunned by the results than the recipient. "I was just happy to be in the preliminaries, and I never would have thought I'd be here," he said after the afternoon awards ceremony at the Tarrant County Convention Center Theatre. Second prize and a silver medal went to Yakov Kasman, 30, of Russia. The bronze medal was awarded to Aviram Reichert, 25, of Israel. Besides the gold medal, Mr. Nakamatsu won cash and a performance contract worth more than $250,000. The Cliburn's prize package is generally considered the most valuable among the scores of piano competitions worldwide. The awards ceremony was the climax of the 17-day contest, which began with 35 pianists May 23. The 12 semifinalists were announced May 27. The six finalists were chosen last Monday.

Extractions: With more and more people seeking channels for creative expression outside of work, the spirit of amateurism is on the rise in the United States. This is one reason why the Van Cliburn Foundation's biennial International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs (IPCOA) has been an unqualified success since its inception in June 1999. The primary reason for its success, however, is the incredible range of talent (musical and otherwise) exhibited by the competitors themselves. These first-rate pianists, from around the world and all walks of life, will present their favorite repertoire in Fort Worth this summer at the third IPCOA. Out of a record 130 applicants, 75 have been selected to participate in this year's competition based on the exceptional quality of their audition tapes and CDs. "These musicians play for the sheer love of it," says Richard Rodzinski, the Van Cliburn Foundation's president. "Most of them are highly trained, accomplished pianists who have opted to pursue other career goals, yet they remain outstanding performers whose ceaseless passion for music is evident in their playing." The Dallas Morning News music critic Scott Cantrell, a returning press jury member, called previous amateur performances "music-making from another world, where magic still held sway." This summer's event will give audiences another opportunity to experience this magic.
