Increasingly, however, I find myself gravitating back to two pianists more than any others. Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau have been fixtures on my CD changer for some time now thankfully, they both have active enough release schedules to keep things new; their respective talents keep it fresh. Extractions: the books The books dedicated to the pinist are two: KEITH JARRETT, IL MIO DESIDERIO FEROCE by Kunihiko, edited in Italy by Socrates Edizioni. The mostly read of the two is for sure the first one, a biography of the pianist cured by the English trumpeter / flügelhorner Ian Carr. Its the classical biography of a musician who traces back the fundamental steps of a career, thus adding something about the private sphere. Which is quite rare and unpublished for a reluctant person, such as Jarrett is. The same Jarrett () and his wife Rose Anne have done their own best to prepare interviews for its realization, inducing the pianist to control and correct the draft before the book was published. The book, divided into 12 chapters, analyzes Jarretts life since his childhood. Almost two chapters are dedicated to this period by means of different evidences on the side of Keiths parents, who allowed also the publication of a few unpublished photos of the adolescent Jarrett. The other chapters tell about the evolution of the pianists career: the period with Charles Lloyd , with Miles Davis , the conquest fo Europe and Japan, and the re-birth period. Peculiar space has been dedicated to the period of

I'm thinking about piano trios that were together for years: Bill Evans with Marc Johnson and Joe La Barbera. Oscar Peterson with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. Ahmad Jamal with Israel Crosby and Vernell Fournier. Gene Harris' Three Sounds with Andy Simpkins and Bill Dowdy. Working bands, not short-lived or studio collaborations. All of these trios mined the Great American Songbook in distinctive and lasting ways, but I'm inclined after hearing "Tokyo '96" to conclude that not even the last and greatest Bill Evans Trio quite reached this peak of creativity and internal telepathy. This is Jarrett's twelfth recording with the Standards Trio since it went into the studio in 1983 for what was planned as a one-off recording session and has lasted, in concert and on record, for 15 years, which in itself is remarkable. Tokyo's Orchard Hall was sold out, no surprise. And for the first time in Japan's history, members of the Imperial Family attended a public jazz concert, a testimony to the respect and admiration that the pianist enjoys in the country.
Keith Jarrett Biography keith jarrett's musical beginnings were rooted more in the classical The beginningof jarrett's career as a jazz Having worked as a cocktail pianist in Boston http://www.hull.ac.uk/php/faspse/biog.htm
Extractions: Keith Jarrett - A Short Biography. The following is intended only as an introduction to Keith Jarrett's life and career: the definitive account of Jarrett's work to date is Ian Carr's biography (see bibliography for details) Keith Jarrett's musical beginnings were rooted more in the classical music tradition than jazz. But then again, talking of Jarrett's music as 'jazz' requires the recognition that that word must in this case encompass an extremely wide range of different musical sources. Indeed, not only has Jarrett recorded and performed classical music extensively (he was worked with, among others Pierre Boulez, Christopher Hogwood and Seiji Ozawa) but some of his recordings have been labelled with the unfortunate term 'world music', although that is in my opinion a serious misunderstanding of the motivation behind them. The beginning of Jarrett's career as a jazz musician reflected the increasingly hard times jazz was starting to face in the early 1960s. Having worked as a cocktail pianist in Boston after leaving the Berklee College of Music (Jarrett's own account of his leaving was of having been thrown out for strumming the strings of a piano), he moved to New York in 1964. But, it was of course extremely difficult to break onto the jazz scene. Finally, after one fortuitous night at the Village Vanguard, Art Blakey hired him, although it was an engagement which didn't last. Instead, it was a contact made in Boston that finally launched Jarrett onto the scene.
