Extractions: Hyperion CDA67034 - 74 minutes My, oh my . . . forty volumes. You'd suppose that by now they'd be scraping the bottom of the barrel. Either they have and Howard makes these things sound better than their intrinsic musical merit, or Liszt is simply an uncommonly interesting musical mind. I suspect a bit of both. The works on the program tell us much about the life of a nineteenth-century piano virtuoso. Our own concert tastes seem positively dour beside those of our forebears. Elaborations of popular songs and dances, opera paraphrases, pieces d'occasion, and especially the variations on "national airs" all crowded the kit bag. The traveling virtuoso was not only the priest of high culture, but pretty much the juke box and (with the "monster concert") t.v. as well. S. Frederick Starr lays out much of this in his recent study of Gottschalk. The two marchesthe second Hungarian and the one written for Goethe's birthdaylack the manic passage work of the typical Lisztian showstopper and really seem sketches for orchestral works, and, indeed, the composer orchestrated both. The Sturmmarsch has the energy of Berlioz's Racozky. Howard here manages to suggest the orchestra through a discreet variety of touch and color. The festival march begins like gangbusters with two stunning harmonic ideas, but soon lapses into the less-than-routine. Not even Howard can save it.

Extractions: Abstract drawing by Phillip Sear Whilst continuing my City career, in the 1980s I gradually returned to piano playing, first as accompanist to operatic societies for musical theatre and operetta productions, then as rehearsal pianist for Sussex opera groups, including New Sussex Opera, Regency Opera, and Heber Opera (see list of shows worked on, below). I attended Martino Tirimo's advanced piano class at Morley College for some years, at which I played for him, Gwynneth Prior, Hamish Milne and others. I have also played at masterclasses at various summer schools and ad hoc classes for, inter alia, Nicolai Demidenko, Christian Blackshaw, and Leslie Howard (including April 1999 Liszt Society masterclass). As accompanist for others, I have played at masterclasses conducted by, inter alia, Robin Bowman, Paul Hamburger, John Cameron, John Carol Case, April Cantelo, Michael Bochmann, Judith Hall, and have given public or workshop performances of solo works by many neglected composers. I have also accompanied singers and instrumentalists in concerts in London and the South East. Details of representative public engagements since Spring 1998 are given elsewhere on this site.

Extractions: "I love so many things, but I had to focus, and I think I did." The show was ended at a tiny club in Los Angeles called The Rose Cafe. KT was singing alone, and the owner of the club heard her and asked if KT had an act and was looking for work. "I never thought of an 'act.' I love doing stage work. I had just come back from doing, Sugar . with Arte Johnson. I never though of standing up in front of people, singing to people, being yourself. My friend, Howard Witt said, 'You've got to do this. This is what you can do that's YOU. Other people can sing opera better; other people can do Shakespeare better. This is what you can do and you need to focus on this.'" Convinced, KT found a teacher named Carlos Noble, a man who became essential in forming her style. "I always introduce Carlos as the man who taught me 'not to sing.' He approached songs like an actor, and taught me to break down the songs, paraphrasing them. When you've made them into something personal, they'll always be yours like Mabel Mercer did, and Sylvia Syms, and Julie Wilson does, these are the people I admire. Before that I was a chirper." They found a pianist, Bobby Gorman, who had been understudy for Stubby Kaye on Broadway. He had a great sense of humor, and sat down at the piano, throwing her barbs.

Extractions: During the 1970's I worked in composer/performer ensembles with composer friends such as John White, Dave Smith and Christopher Hobbs. We played each others' music, writing for each other as performers and accepting the frequent oddity of the ensuing instrumentation. The ethos was one of mutual respect, musical trust and an ability to understand forms of musical shorthand. The first time that we gave a concert entirely of my work was at the 1979 Festival d'Automne in Paris, in the Chapelle de la Sorbonne when I augmented the group with 3 of my students to perform pieces such as The Sinking of the Titanic In 1981 John White and I put together a combined ensemble for a Regional Arts Contemporary Music Network tour which featured, more or less equally, works by each of us, played by a group which included many of the formidable musicians performing John's music for Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman at the National Theatre. When I started my own ensemble I worked on the principle that pervaded our early work - that first and foremost the ensemble should comprise musicians with whom I wanted to work rather than players who were there simply because I needed certain instruments. For this reason the ensemble has often had an unusual line-up. In 1986, for example, there were 6 players: violin, clarinet, piano, 2 percussion, bass, with the last four all playing percussion and one of the percussionists also playing recorder. My current ensemble is much larger, between 6 and 12 people according to repertoire, but all are versatile musicians being essentially chamber music players who are also exceptional individual soloists. The ensemble has changed over the years, and many fine players have either been members of the ensemble or have performed with it on specific occasions. My closest musical colleague Dave Smith has been with me longest, and we worked together even before my ensemble came into being. The only time that I have performed in New York, for example, was when Dave and I gave two curious duo-piano concerts at The Kitchen in 1978. He was also in the group which played in Paris in 1979 though, because of the need to cover university teaching for myself and John White, he did not tour in the 1981 band.
