TEL/FAX 01508 548914 E-mail ajgiller@waitrose.com youngperformers@hotmail.com On Monday 21 September 1840 Franz Liszt gave an afternoon piano recital at the Assembly House in Norwich. About 140 guests paid 6s each to hear (arguably) the greatest pianist/composer of the nineteenth century. Local reviews of Liszts performance were not too flattering: his musical innovation at the keyboard was rather challenging for audiences outside of London; he was scandalising Europe at that time with a very public high-profile affair; and was also said to be exhausted from constant travel.

The Wild Bunch/Music/Leslie Howard leslie howard a Master pianist 1985, leslie howard has been engaged on the largest recording project ever undertaken by a solo pianist nothing less http://web.ukonline.co.uk/wildbunch/howard.htm
Extractions: Born in Australia but resident in London since 1972, Howard is a familiar figure as a soloist and ensemble player at numerous international festivals. With a vast array of concertos, he has played with many of the great orchestras of the world and worked with many distinguished conductors, Claudio Abbado, Arthur Fiedler, Vernon Handley, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Sir Charles Mackerras and Fritz Rieger among them. Howard's work as a composer encompasses opera, orchestral music, chamber music and songs, and his facility in completing unfinished works has resulted in commissions as diverse as a new realisation of Bach's Musical Offering Recordings by Leslie Howard include music by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Granados, Franck, Grainger, Glazunov and Rubinstein. Most important of all, since 1985, Leslie Howard has been engaged on the largest recording project ever undertaken by a solo pianist - nothing less than the complete solo piano music of Liszt, a project which it is estimated will take fifteen years to complete and total some 80 compact discs on the Hyperion label. By summer 1994, Howard had completed 54 of them. The importance of the Liszt project cannot be overemphasised: it encompasses world premiere recordings, including much music still unpublished and works unheard since Liszt's lifetime. So far, Howard has been awarded a Grand Prix du Disque for no fewer than five volumes of the series - most recently for Volume 24.
Why? Why leslie howard? I think that I might have a genetic propensity to like leslie howard. You see, it turns out that my grandmother, Ethel Kalisch Hoffer, adored leslie during her youth in Amish Country. Did you know that there's a pianist named leslie howard who plays Liszt, a horseback riding champ named leslie howardBurr http://home.earthlink.net/~beckles/why.htm
Extractions: I think that I might have a genetic propensity to like Leslie Howard. You see, it turns out that my grandmother, Ethel Kalisch Hoffer, adored Leslie during her youth in Amish Country. (Obviously, she was not Amish, as she went to the movies, and Amish people don't usually do that.) It would probably make a good story if I told you about my grandmother and I bonding over Leslie Howard, which I wish could've happened, but she died when I was 10, which makes the whole story a wee bit odder. I'd call it a coincidence that I happened to turn on the TV to watch Pygmalion one day in the ninth grade, but I don't believe in coincidence. Whatever the heck it was though, I did turn on the TV, watch Pygmalion and come to the conclusion that I liked Leslie Howard a whole lot better than Rex Harrison as Professor Henry Higgins. I watched as many Leslie movies as I could find on TV and searched mostly in vain for Leslie information on the web. Did you know that there's a pianist named Leslie Howard who plays Liszt, a horseback riding champ named Leslie Howard-Burr and a whole bunch of people who have relatives named Leslie or Howard in their family trees? Well, there are. This is basically my story of how I found Leslie Howard. I hope I was sufficiently entertaining. If you have any stories like this (or even not like this) about you and Leslie Howard, please
Extractions: OVERALL NOISE RATING: 3 (After 20 years of the "Courtesy Campaign", I have to admit, people still have to be reminded that it is a Concert Mortal Sin to leave before the final encore - please put sufficient parking coupons for your cars the next time...) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. Johann D'Souza Some people might not know this but the pianist Leslie Howard (left) has had a full list (pardon the pun) of things to do in the last 15 years. He has literally lived the life of Liszt, writing, researching, playing, recording (OK, maybe Liszt couldn't do this) and championing his music. I was told that for every CD he has recorded he has personally done the research for the material in the album sleeves. (There are about 94 discs worth on Hyperion - click here for Hyperion's Liszt Index ). The good news is that after the project (expected to end in the year 2000) he is going to combine all the material into a book (publishers please reserve a copy for me).

Its strings vibrated to my emotions, and its keys obeyed my every caprice." Liszt's piano works constitute a musical autobiography that until now has been incomplete. Despite the great popularity of a few works such as the B Minor Sonata, the Hungarian Rhapsodies, and the Liebestraum No. 3, hundreds more have been either forgotten or lost.

Extractions: Vanessa Thorpe, The Observer, 5 Jan 2003 He is one of the most promising young pianists playing in Britain. Now he faces the threat of violent persecution after Britain refused his application for political asylum and decreed that he should return to his native Zimbabwe. Michael Brownlee Walker, 25, who is gay, received a letter from the Home Office last month turning down his application for asylum and informing him he must leave the country, in spite of his fears of victimisation. Brownlee Walker, who won a place five years ago to study classical piano at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, is the great-grandson of one of Zimbabwe's earliest white settlers. His family ran a large farm near Bulawayo in the south of the country, but last Easter the property was overrun by supporters of President Robert Mugabe. His parents and brother have since fled the country. As the son of a prominent former landowner, Brownlee Walker believes that his surname alone is likely to ensure he is harassed and possibly detained if he goes back to Zimbabwe. What is more, in recent months the accomplished accompanist has attended several protest events organised in London by exiled members of the opposition group, the Movement for Democratic Change or MDC.
