Extractions: Horowitz, Vladimir 1904-89, Russian-American virtuoso pianist, b. Kiev. Horowitz studied at the Kiev Conservatory. After a Russian debut at the age of 17, he appeared with overwhelming success in Berlin and Paris in 1924 and made his American debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1928. Possessing remarkable technical virtuosity, he soon became one of the most popular pianists in the United States. Unlike contemporary pianists, he was willing to interpret the music independently of the composer. In 1933 he married the daughter of Arturo Toscanini and settled (1940) in New York City. Horowitz gave few recitals after 1953. See biography by Harold C. Schonberg (1992).

Extractions: Vladimir HOROWITZ "With Horowitz, the piano is charged with magic powders and an unheard of eloquence in the true sense of the word, each note having its own life which surrounds it with its own space." - Igor Markevitch The name of Vladimir Horowitz denotes the legend of a super-pianist who reached millions of listeners with his art. Horowitz's enormous bell-like thunderous sound and physical ability to carry out technical miracles made him unique. Piano teachers gasped in horror to see a low wrist placed well below the keyboard with nearly straight fingers, anatomically 'wrong' for relaxed and accurate piano-playing. Yet Horowitz's physique permitted this position and enabled him, when he wished, to achieve an evenness and accuracy defying those adopting a correct position. In later years the attention surrounding him completely distorted a genuine perception of his art, heralding him as "The Last Romantic". Such a stereotype is not only wrong but rather an injustice to his art, which ought to fascinate in the way it departed from Romanticism to make Horowitz was one of the first modernists. Even Horowitz's early repertoire was poorly represented by too few recordings being made at the beginning of his international career. With a wildly increasing popularity, it is surprising that he was not commissioned to record more at the beginning. In looking through old programs, we find Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit and Jeux d'eau, Brahms' F minor Sonata and Paganini Variations, Liszt's Dante Sonata, Mazeppa Etude, Orage and Feux Follets and Balakirev's Islamey. Luckily we have the Liszt Sonata from this period: at the time of his fiftieth anniversary, Horowitz turned backward to again play the sonata and Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto, but they are removed from his earlier level. He had by then grown into such a legendary figure that all was equally applauded with overwhelming enthusiasm, even when he once suffered a disastrous season in which anti-depressant medication effected his control and lucidity.

Extractions: My Horowitz Collection The Russian pianist Vladimir Horowitz certainly was one of the premier artists of the last century. But when I started collecting music, he was in his famous 13-year hiatus from concertizing and recording (I saw his return to the concert hall on TV in 1965). But once he was again recording, I began to collect his recordings. I watched the TV special about his return to Russia, seeing him play Scriabin for the composer's daughter or niece, I forget which. I do not have anywhere near a complete collection, but I treasure the ones I have. Vladimir Horowitz: Favorite Beethoven Sonatas This is the first Horowitz recording I bought, once I had a compact-disc player. Since Beethoven is in my estimation the greatest composer for the keyboard, it seemed appropriate that I should begin my collection with perhaps the most popular Beethoven piano work of all, the "Moonlight Sonata." When I was in high school and first began familiarizing myself with the piano keyboard (at family's and friends' houses, at the band hall, etc.), I tried to memorize the first movement because I thought it was the most beautiful piece of music I had ever heard. I never learned past the first page. Later, when I had a piano of my own, I learned the first few measures of the "Pathetique" sonata because I read somewhere of someone who had done that, mastering the opening few measures, and would play them and then quit, as if he were bored.

Extractions: Above all pianists - indeed, above virtually any musician of the last fifty years - Arthur Rubinstein represented in both his life and his music-making a unique joie de vivre . That alone would set him apart in this serious musical age, where there is a high degree of skill but very little charm or poetry. Arthur Rubinstein was able to communicate joy in his playing. He loved the piano, he loved the music he played, and he was always able to charm audiences all over the world with one of the most extraordinary personalities that this century has seen. Of course that charm was buttressed by the mind of a superb musician, and by the fingers of a spectacular technician. Rubinstein coaxed a big, sonorous, golden tone from the instrument, and his fingers were in total command of anything in his repertoire. And that, paradoxically, was true even when he dropped notes or smudged passages here and there. For it was clear that a sloppy episode resulted not from lack of native ability but rather from sheer scorn of pedanticism. He was daring, he took chances, and if a few notes suffered en route that was unimportant. He was a natural, born to play the piano, and when he was on the concert stage one felt as though the piano itself was welded to his body. Musician and instrument were one. innigkeit of others, or the egoism of still others. Rubinstein played every piece in a natural, healthy, extroverted manner, with sweep and a big line, with color and fire. As he played, everything sounded natural and logical.

Extractions: Vladimir Horowitz whom Paderewski has called the greatest of the younger pianists, was born in Kiev on October 1st, 1904. His father, a successful engineer, provided a comfortable home for his family. Vladimir showed musical promise as a child, and was early given his first piano lessons by his mother, a graduate from the Conservatory. When his progress made it essential to find more adequate instruction, he was sent to the Kiev Conservatory where his teacher was Felix Blumenfeld. Horowitz was graduated from the Conservatory with high honours in piano playing. Horowitz's uncle, a music critic, arranged for Horowitz's first public concert, which took place in 1922. His virtuosity was so remarkable that almost immediately Horowitz became a favourite. In 1923 he gave no less than seventy concerts, twenty-three of them in Leningrad alone. As the Soviet Union was at the time suffering an acute crisis, Horowitz was frequently paid for his performances with flour and butter instead of money. In 1924 he toured Europe with piano recitals, performing in Germany, Holland, Italy, Austria, Spain and France. Wherever he played he was a sensation. In Germany some critics called him Busoni's successor. In Paris there were many who considered him the first successor of Rubinstein .
