Extractions: In the mid-1920s Langgaard's music went through astonishing changes. Suddenly he decided that the highly original and imaginative works he'd been writing for ten years - like the Third String Quartet - were a wrong turning. Instead he began, with great difficulty, to compose in a style inspired by the Romantic age - and stuck to it for twenty years. Donald Macleod, with Langgaard's biographer Bendt Viinholt Nielsen, explores how Langgaard's strange character, and his complete rejection within Denmark, led him to make this painful U-turn. But it wasn't the end of Langgaard's remarkable story: towards the end of World War Two he took another new - and even more astonishing - direction in his music: 5:00 am I Concerti
