"Hess" is my alias, but there's nothing special about it: it's just my last name. But people keep calling me Rudolph . . . So I guess it's about time I came out of the closet. Like Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan, I've kept my civilian identity hidden so far. But in the interest of club morale, I'll let people guess - for a prize. So as a prize I hereby make the following offer: I will play the first person who guesses the true Hess from the choices below, AND in that game I promise to purchase a battleship for either Russia or Germany, depending on whether I am Allies or Axis, sometime in the first three moves. So take your pick, and respond to herald@axisandallies.net . . . b) Son of Dame Myra Hess, the noted English pianist, who was awarded Commander in the Order of the British Empire for entertaining the British public during the Blitz with her outdoor noontime concerts in London. (They failed to notice that she always performed Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, and other German composers.) I'm currently living in Brighton in East Sussex, England. c) Associate Professor of Axis and Allies studies at Harvard University, my dissertation was entitled, "Purchasing Russian Battleships as the Preferred Route to Allied Victory." A long-haired radical assistant professor at the Divinity school named AxAmaster disputed my thesis and wrote his own book, but I got back at him by voting to deny him tenure.

In the six generations of the Debussy family preceding his birth, there appears to have been no trace of musical ability. The Paris Conservatoire accepted him at the age of ten. Although brilliantly endowed musically, he revolted against the rigid system that was inflicted upon him. Under the celebrated Marmontel, his piano professor, Debussy's pianistic gifts ripened. However, his parents were unhappy that he never captured a first prize in piano playing at the Conservatoire. Their hopes that he would eventually earn a living as a professional virtuoso vanished. In harmony class Claude was impatient with the stringent rules by which he had to abide. He called César Franck a "modulating machine". When someone asked, "What rules do you follow?" the bright but insolent youngster replied, "mon plasir." Later in life he was to use his caustic wit and glib pen as an idiosyncratic music critic.

Extractions: Home Teaching Philosophy References ... Contact Do you speak Chinese? Probably not. It might be a fascinating subject to study, but unless you are from a Chinese background, or were a particularly gifted student in this field it would most likely seem quite foreign. Many of us do feel a connection to a language other than English, perhaps Hebrew or Italian. We may not be fluent in it but it carries an emotional resonance; we feel a connection to it (as would a Chinese person to his language). I like to think of music in these terms; as language. And I'd like my students to have the opportunity to hear and feel music at least as closely as a second language; closer perhaps, since there are no words! A lifetime of listening to music has helped me to enjoy it as I do. So I thought a list of recommended recordings and artists might help my students and their parents find some of the music that's "spoken" to me over the years. Unlike practicing, which must be organized and disciplined, this listening is just for enjoyment, though it can lead to thinking, enthusiasm, mellowness (depending on the music at hand!) and increased appreciation for the arts. It can become part of the atmosphere of your home. And, especially if a child has not yet "learned" that classical music is "boring", a parent's interest can send a signal to a child that it may be something worthwhile.
