MARY PEARSON - Jazz Singer: Discography I added a few songs with pianist Lynne Arriale their inspiration and encouragement, thanks to sam Arlen, Nancy Barell, Michael Bourne, haywood Burns, Ed http://www.marypearsonjazzsinger.com/discography/
Extractions: "Lazy Afternoon" is the perfect prelude, instantly drawing the listener in. "Take Five" is all longing and suggestion and seduction. "The More I See You" is considered by Mary to be the definitive song on the album. Other highlights include the three original love songs by Mary, songs that, once heard by other singers, I expect will be sung more and more. You And I is a virtual suite of love songs, a seamless tapestry of romance. "You And I is about intimacy, devotion, seduction, passion and love. It's you and I from beginning to end." It's also the first album from the first singer signed to Arkadia Jazz and one hopes, just the first of many to come from this uniquely lyrical jazz singer, Mary Pearson.

Friday 25th May, 8-11.15pm King David's Blues Band are a popular regular item on the London Blues scene playing regularly at the West End's "12 bar Club, the "Nothing But The Blues" Bar and the Station Tavern in Notting Hill, all well known London Blues venues. The band's rhythm section has Brian Nevill on drums and Matt Radford on double bass. They spent many years with Big Joe Louis and his Rhythm Kings and have also played with U.S. Blues legends Lazy Lester and Homesick James. The front man for the trio is Dave Purdy; he is no stranger to Big Joe Louis either! This outfit gives lively, very lively, 1940's, 1950's style down-home blues, with the swinging-est rhythm section behind some nifty guitar work and bluesy vocals. Roger Carey started in rock bands and has incorporated early and recent influences into line up. The Jazz influence comes from work with Pete Burden, Al Casey and Slim Gaillard in earlier years, and Mark Edwards, John Etheridge and Dick Pearce in later years. Playing with blues artists Roger Hubbard, Louis Turpin, The Jukes and touring with the Legendary Long John Baldry left an inevitable trace of the blues. His long time as bassist with Liane Carroll, with whom he played numerous weeks at Ronnie Scotts and made 3 CD's, his two years in "Field of Blue" with singer Jacqueline Dankworth all added to his experience. Roger sings, plays guitar and bass in this band who were recently described as having "phenomenal musicianship combined with idiosyncratic material".

"My dad tried to play piano by ear, but I always knew when he was doing something wrong and what he was doing wrong, and he'd get mad when I'd try to correct him," Salomone says laughing. Despite his penchant for rolling Boogie-Woogie, as Salomone was maturing, the only bandmates he could find in Tama favored Country-Western sounds. "I tried to turn them on to Rock n Roll, but I couldnt do it," he says. So he moved to the closest city he could find - Des Moines, where the 60-year-old pianist/organist still makes his home today. "I hooked up with a pretty well-known guitarist at the time by the name of Don Archer ," Salomone says. With Archer's help, he learned more about music than he ever knew existed. "Archer knew Jazz and he was a big help to me." With more firepower added to his musical repertoire, Salomone rewarded himself by buying his first Hammond B3 organ in 1965.
Vivian Rose's Movie Reviews Shine. Shine is a true, intriguing story about a talented but disturbed young pianistin Australia. Tony Chris haywood . sam back to review page. Beetlejuice. http://www.girltech.com/Girl_Views/GV_movie_shine.html
Extractions: by Vivian Rose Shine "Shine" is a true, intriguing story about a talented but disturbed young pianist in Australia. Under his father's thumb, David Helfgott learns to play the piano - and develops a remarkable talent. Although he is invited to join many famous colleges abroad, his father refuses to allow David to leave. Finally, David does insist on going away to the prestigious Royal College of Music in London - and his father disowns him. Despite the fact that he is finally away from his half-crazed father, David's mental health continues to deteriorate. In one humorous scene, David goes out to get his mail - with absolutely no pants on! Desperate to win an upcoming competition, David works night and day, practicing the difficult piano concerto, Rachmaninoff the 3rd. At the competition, he performs the piece perfectly, but then cracks up and is sent to the looney bin - literally. The rest of the movie depicts his life in the asylum - and eventually out again - and to his life as a musician today. Following the ups and downs of David Helftgott's life becomes a strange but fascinating road. That's why I recommend this movie.
EXCERPTS FROM A FAMILY MEMOIR By Stanley G. Eskin their toughguy leaders like Big Bill haywood. none, divorced from a distinguishedpianist, and for heterosexual solace and companionship with sam, but ended http://www.casa-chia.org/Sam/memoir1.html
Extractions: Notes after conversation with my half-brother, Otho Eskin We do not know when nor at what age Morris Eskin, doubtless fleeing pogroms, emigrated from the Russian empire, probably from Smolensk (or maybe Kiev: Smolensk was outside the Pale, whereas Kiev was just inside). His name was probably Moishe, which was edited into "Morris." Let us say he was in his twenties and came with a wife, though he might have been fifteen and married here. It was most likely in the 1880's, perhaps the early '90's. The port of entry was most likely, and classically, New York, but he wandered south a ways and lived in Washington for some time, until moving to Baltimore in 1898, shortly after the birth of Sam. Ed. Notes. The Thirteenth Census of the United States: 1910 of Baltimore, MD. Reports the year of immigration for Morris as 1890 and "Na" for naturalized, and his age given as 35. Rachel, aged 33 is shown as his wife, the year of immigration as 1895. Each of their places of birth shown as "Russ-Great Russian". The numbers of years of marriage is shown as 11. Morris' occupation is shown as Engineer/Locomotive and her occupation as Saleslady, Grocery store. Both sons were enumerated as being born in the District of Columbia, with Sam being listed as Samuel aged 11, and his brother as James aged 9. They were living at 1734 Bell Avenue, Baltimore. Their Maryland born neighbors' occupations were listed as Front Matcher/Shirt Factory, Fireman/Locomotive, Dispatcher/Railroad, Carpenter/Railroad shop, and Conductor/Steam Railroad.]

Extractions: Inductee Profile: Born July 26, 1914 Died November 11, 1993 Jazz trumpeter, Erskine Hawkins, was born in Birmingham, Alabama July 26, 1914. He was one of five inaugural inductees into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1978. The first formal appearance of Erskine Hawkins and his Orchestra was in 1938 when the band won a recording contract with RCA Victor . However, the inception of the band had occurred two years earlier when it was known as The 'Bama State Collegians. Hawkins, whose biggest influences were Louis Armstrong records, skipped out on an 'Bama State Collegians band trip to New Jersey so he could play some gigs in New York. At one of these early shows, Armstrong surprised him backstage at the Apollo Theater. From then on, whenever Hawkins came to New York, Armstrong would also take the stage at the Savoy Ballroom, where Hawkins' dance band attracted a loyal following. Hawkins' band was so popular that he was able to retain a permanent roster of players, most of whom were from Birmingham. The style was "down-home" and blues-inspired, but it could still swing and lay down a great dance beat. Two of his chief arrangers were pianist Avery "After Hours" Parrish and trumpeter Sam Lowe. Baritone saxophone soloist Haywood Henry, who stayed with Hawkins until the band broke up in 1953, anchored the music securely in a solid harmony. During the band'' heyday, the 1930s and 40s, Hawkins featured vocalists Ida James, Delores Brown and Della Reese.
