Charles' endless love for classical music and popular love songs shone through each and every performance and his energy and warmth flowed across the stage as a whole new generation discovered his glowing talent. A contemporary of Nat 'King' Cole in his early days, Charles helped popularize what became known as 'cocktail blues'; indeed, tho' his songs often told tragic tales, his velvet-coated voice overcame the subject matter, hypnotizing the listener as he caressed each well-crafted lyric. His classic early recordings are owned by EMI Records and he was the last

Extractions: by Eric Myers The pianist Tim Stevens, along with Nick Haywood (bass) and Tony Floyd (drums), began his sole performance at the Wangaratta festival at 4 pm on Sunday, November 5. Little did he, or anyone else, imagine that, about an hour later, he would be part of an Australian contingent invited to perform at the next Umbria Jazz festival (in July, 2001). Carlo Pagnotta was mesmerised immediately by Tim Stevens's work: his touch on the piano, his lyricism, his harmonic command, his intelligence, his taste. Pagnotta insisted on meeting Tim after the performance and, on receiving two copies of the Browne Haywood Stevens CD Sudden In a Shaft of Sunlight , announced that, the following week in New York, he would give one CD to his friend Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note, and the other to Tommy Li Puma of Universal. Tim might be forgiven for feeling somewhat vindicated by Carlo Pagnotta's immediate interest in his music. 1999 had not been a very good year. Tim had made the short list of ten for the semi-finals of the 1999 piano competition at the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards, but did not make the final three. In the 1999 ARIA awards, Sudden In a Shaft of Sunlight made the short-list of five for the Best Australian Jazz Release (out of 33 nominations), but was edged out by the Andrew Speight Quartet's self-titled bop CD.

Extractions: Here and Now Ike was born in Clarksdale Ms., Novermber 5, 1931. His mother bought him a piano at age 7 after he was inspired listening to Pinetop Perkins practicing at Ike's childhood friend Ernest Lane's house. (Ernest is in the current Kings of Rhythm band playing piano). Ike quickly absorbed Pinetop's lessons and before he entered his teenage years he was backing up Robert Nighthawk and Sonny Boy Williamson at clubs and when they played live in the studio on radio broadcasts. Ike began to build his skills as a band leader and writer as a young teen. He also sat in with Riley B.B. King's pianist. King noted at the time: "I'd know Ike Turner from the Delta...Helluva piano player. Plus he could dance and organize a band. He was younger than me, but more advanced. Serious writer. Ike was in tune with the grown-up music when he was still a kid." In the early 1950s Ike brought talented musicians from the Delta to record at the memphis Recording Service, later named Sun Studios. In addition to recording his own sides with his Kings of Rhythm, Ike made recordings and acted as talent scout for Sam Phillips and the Bihari Brothers of Modern Records. Ike was on the piano on the first sides of Howlin Wolf, and B.B. King's first number 1 hit "3 O'Clock Blues" He also recorded Bobby Blue Bland, his dear friend Little Milton Campbell, and Elmore James, Junior Parker and more. In 1952-3 Ike began to play the guitar in addition to piano. Her recorded several sides for the Modern Label in the next few months that were later released as the album "Rock the Blues" which Lester Bangs says may have been "the greatest guitar record of all time." Ike's distinctive "Whammy Bar" sound was developed at this time is in evidence to this day.

Extractions: This is A Personal History - an Outline of North American Popular Music and Its Assimilation From and Merger Into World Music I have listened to most of the listed musicians live - since the mid-1950s - or I have personal music library copies of each of the categories of earlier performance(s), performer(s) - and types of music, interspersed amongst other types and sources of music - early to present - from around the globe. The topic has many judgemental problems, simply because we do not all have the same preferences, in food, drink, temperature, or sounds. What we call Classical Music, or Renaissance, or Gregorian Chant, were and are forms of popular music... As are Ragas, Cumbia, Tango, Shamizen, Flamenco, Gamelan or ? If you have trouble believing me, listen to a little Charles Alkan, or Godowsky from the Classical MIDI Archives (below)... But don't forget to come back!!!! My Problem is that I like most all of them, I even enjoy truly great accordian (bandoneon) players... This Chronology is mostly about North American Popular Music forms other than Blue Grass, Country and Western or Rock 'n' Roll. If I were also to include the Caribbean, Central and South America, there would be a lot more branches on the tree. (Maybe later?) I am still looking forward to the next real innovation... Since the mid 1970s North American Popular Music has languished at edges of Heavy Metal, and pointless Angst Rock-and-Roll. But, every once in a While...

Extractions: Storyville STCD 8049 Recorded live in Chicago in 1975, shortly after the Myers brothers reformed the group after laying off for more than a decade, this CD includes guest appearances by guitarists Joe Carter and Bobby King, singer Johnny Drummer (who does a terrific turn on "Sweet Home Chicago") and others. Louis Myers guitar is alternately sharp and greasy, laying down fleet lines on "Youre the One" and stinging staccato on "Dont Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," and Dave Myers large and to-the-point bass playing is just about perfect throughout. Drummer Fred Below, "king of the Chicago beat," is rock steady and typically graceful, although Marcelle Morgantinis vocal-biased recording is only fair and most of the bands subtlety is lost in the murk. About half of the material on this CD is previously unreleased. Dave Kirby

Snake Eyes (Palmetto) Naturally, Hatza is well steeped in the blue bop of Jimmy Smith. But, like Defrancesco, he seems to gravitate more toward the rapid-fire soulfulness of Charles Earland and the modal funk of Lonnie Smith (though he avoids the otherworlds of Larry Young that Defrancesco sometimes explores). The result on this set, the third of his Palmetto releases, is a pleasing program of solid riffing on catchy jazz rooted in soul, gospel, funk and blues. The Hatza Organization is a solid quartet, featuring returning guitarist Paul Bollenbeck (still poised to fulfill his promise, but good even in his Scofield bag), tenor man Ralph Lalama and drummer Dennis Chambers. The best moments are upbeat: the gospel funk of "Stand Up and Be Counted," the soul strut of "Change the World" and the mode supreme of "Trane Station." The remaining half dozen tunes have an attractive appeal that will sound familiar to those who enjoyed Hatzas previous
