DSM Records - Welcome! steve here are his frequent musical partner, pianist Kevin Hays Entered My Mind wasthe basis of steve's love for House Is Not A Home first drew hall to this http://www3.sympatico.ca/dsmrecords/dsm-3019.html
Extractions: at La Maison de la Culture Frontenac Montreal born Steve Hall is no newcomer to music. After many years playing locally he, in 1977, received a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he studied with Joe Allard, Jaki Byard and George Russell. He won a prize as soloist when the NEC's big band took first place at the Notre Dame Collegiate jazz festival. An improviser of the highest order with an immediately identifiable sound, Steve has made New York his home base since 1979 and is held in high esteem there by his peers. In New York he gained big band experience with the orchestras of Machito, Byard, Gil Evans and Lionel Hampton. As well this major talent has not gone unnoticed in the small group field and such diverse jazz artists as Art Blakey, Cedar Walton, Wynton Marsalis, Elvin Jones, Woody Shaw and Roy Haynes have availed themselves of his services. The musicians joining Steve here are his frequent musical partner, pianist Kevin Hays, well known for his work with Sonny Rollins and his own sessions for the Blue Note label, Joe Martin, an unsung bassist who should have a brilliant future and another sometime associate, drummer Lorne Ellen who also spent considerable time in New York. A marvellous empathy between Steve and Kevin can be heard here, particularly in the duets.

Extractions: ASC CD6 Steve Plews Ascension: Made In Manchester ascrecords.com "...Ascension is the nine-piece band organised by pianist Steve Plews to play his own compositions. And a great success it is too, judging by 'Made in Manchester' (ASC CD6) recorded 'live' at the city's Band on the Wall in 1995. Plews' imaginative compositions provide an excellent setting for powerful solo work from saxophonists Ed Jones and Mike Hall, trumpeters Duncan Mackay and Steve Waterman, trombonist Liam Kirkman and violinist Chris Garrick. The rhythm section, too, is a delight throughout, with Plews' sparkling piano work complemented by bassist Steve Berry and drummer Peter Fairclough..."

Essay About The Late Michel Petrucciani By Steve Voce The thenvirtuoso trumpeter Freddie Hubbard invited the pianist to join his All Starband and In 1986 he recorded at Montreux with Shorter and hall. steve VOCE. http://www.jazzpages.com/txtext/petrucciani_voce.htm
Extractions: "My philosophy," said Michel Petrucciani, "is to have a really good time and never to let anything stop me from doing what I want to do." Nothing unusual about that, one might think. But since Petrucciani was an adult standing only three feet high and weighing 65 pounds, one might expect his ambitions to have been, so to speak, closer to the ground. But, had he not aspired to achievements above his station, he might have chosen to play something more convenient such as the harmonica rather than the piano. Had he done so music would have missed one of the most powerful jazz pianists of the last two decades. One of the many remarkable things about Petrucciani was not so much the fact that when he played he overcame his handicaps, but that one was not aware of their existence. He could do anything and more than most of the best players of the day. He played across the full span of the grand piano's keyboard and, despite his tiny legs, was able to make full use of the instrument's pedals - the loud one was of particular importance to him. He was one of the most passionate and extrovert of soloists and the aggressive hurdling of his up-tempo work established an exciting bond with his audience that pushed aside any thought that he might deserve sympathy. He certainly never looked for it.

Extractions: MUSICIANS Listening is still the key. Jim Hall Jim Hall s musical style has been in a state of continuous development throughout the course of his career a career that to date has spanned more than five decades. But just as with advances in technology, medicine, and other fields, Jims revolutionary twists and turns in this last decade have been swift. With each new concert tour and recording (nine new CDs since 1991) Jim reveals yet another facet of himself. Not only is Jim Hall one of the jazz worlds favorite guitarists, but also in recent years he has earned critical acclaim for his skills as a composer and arranger. The first formal recognition came in 1997 when Jim won the 1997 New York Jazz Critics Circle Award for Best Jazz Composer/Arranger. His pieces for string, brass, and vocal ensembles can be heard on two recent recordings ( Textures 1997 and By Arrangement 1998, both on Telarc) and his original composition, Quartet Plus Four , a piece for jazz quartet augmented by the Zapolski string quartet, was debuted in Denmark during the concert and ceremony where he was awarded the coveted Jazzpar Price. Just a few months prior to that, Jim got standing ovations at a concert in Pescara, Italy where he performed a complete program of his original compositions with a 12-piece string section from the Pescara Conservatory of Music. In addition to the recent focus on orchestral and choral composition, Jim remains active as a player, working and recording with a variety of ensembles. In addition to working with his trio, Jim likes to spice up the mix with various guests. From time to time you might hear

Steve Reich Featured In A Forum And In Concert Alumnus and noted contemporary composer steve Reich will present a to mark the openingof a new concert hall. Guest pianist steven Lubin will present a lecture http://www.news.cornell.edu/Chronicle/98/2.12.98/music.html
Extractions: Alumnus and noted contemporary composer Steve Reich will present a Composer's Forum Friday at 1:25 p.m. in Barnes Hall, and then will have his music performed the next night. Reich '57, who also will receive the Cornell Alumni Award for Distinction in the Arts on Friday night (see story) , won a Grammy Award for best contemporary composition in 1990 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1994. His appearance at Cornell is co-sponsored by the Cornell Council for the Arts. Reich's music will be performed by the Cornell Contemporary Chamber Players (CCCP) Saturday at 8 p.m. in Barnes Hall. Selections will include Music for Pieces of Wood, Nagoya Marimbas and Six Marimbas . Also performing will be the Ithaca College School of Music Percussion Ensemble with Gordon Stout, Ithaca College associate professor of percussion. Reich's goal in writing Music for Pieces of Wood (1973), he says, was to compose music employing the simplest instruments possible in this case the claves, because of their different and exact pitches and timbre. "This happens to be one of the loudest pieces of music I have ever written, though it uses no amplification whatsoever. Its rhythmic structure is based on a process in which some rhythm pattern is building up in the course of substituting beats for rests," he said. The piece will be presented by five of the Ithaca College ensemble's percussionists.
