La Scena Musicale - On The Aisle By Philip Anson Things got off to a bad start when the scheduled Russian pianist Boris Berezovskycancelled and was replaced by French pianist helene grimaud, who lives http://www.scena.org/columns/anson/000121-PA-RNO.htm
Extractions: Jan. 21, 2000. New York - The fall of Soviet Bloc communism and the subsequent drying up of government subsidies stimulated the creation of several new orchestras along the lines of privately sponsored western institutions. Hungary's Budapest Festival Orchestra was founded in 1983 by conductor Ivan Fischer and pianist Zoltan Kocsis. The Moscow-based Russian National Orchestra was created in the former Soviet Union in September 1990 by pianist Mikhail Pletnev, bringing together what promotional literature describes as "the finest musicians in the country" and "many players from the principal ranks of the major Soviet orchestras, most of them soloists in their own right." The need to earn hard currency and to promote their thirteen Deutsche Gramophon recordings means that the RNO has to tour constantly. Their latest American tour covered Ann Arbor, Worcester, Troy, Long Island, and Manhattan between Jan. 19 and Jan. 24. Performing six concerts in as many days is no way to get the best out of weary musicians, as the RNO's lacklustre Jan. 21 concert at Lincoln Centre's Avery Fisher Hall demonstrated.
Extractions: Ravel Rhapsodie espagnole In the Janacek's Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen , Vladimir Ashkenazy did not seem to be really conducting or leading the orchestra; he had no sense of the dramatic contour of the work, sounding as it did so totally disjointed and uncoordinated. A disappointing start to the evening. Things improved somewhat with Ravels Piano Concerto in G, played with great passion and precision by Helene Grimaud; this wonderful pianist combines great intelligence with a dazzling technique, her incredibly nimble fingers making short work of even the most difficult arpeggios. Unlike her conductor, she had total control, flare and rhythmic vitality. Unfortunately, sometimes her playing was engulfed by the hall's notoriously dry acoustic, and on occasion even drowned out by the orchestras excessively loud playing, due entirely to Ashkenazy's bombastic conducting. Being a renowned pianist himself, fellow feeling at least should have produced a far more sympathetic and sensitive accompaniment.

Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including
February Highlights of Chicago Presents Chamber Music Series celebrates Valentines Day with aconcert of sonatas by flutist Emmanuel Pahud and pianist helene grimaud. http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/030206/calendar.shtml
Extractions: Speaking of Masur and the New York Philharmonic, they are fine, unassuming accompanists. Their performance has to rank as one of the best they've given on behalf of an accomplished soloist like Ms. Grimaud (Only their collaboration with violinist Maxim Vengerov on Teldec's recently released recording of Dvorak's Violin Concerto might be better.). Once more, this has to rank as among the highlights of Masur's tenure as music director of The New York Philharmonic. Within the liner notes are a notes describing Ms. Grimaud's devotion towards wolves. Animal lovers of all kinds will be delighted. I commend her keen understanding of the wolf's importance as a key player in forest ecosystems around the globe, especially here in North America. Regarding her devotion towards music and wolves, I can only say je vous aime! Review Summary: Didn't do it for me.

Extractions: Thanks to everyone who came and donated to our silent auction for the second annual Wolf Center Benefit! This year was an overwhelming success and raised 37 thousand dollars for the Center. We are grateful to Charles and Donna Ward who opened up their beautiful estate in Mount Kisco, New York for the event. Pianist Helene Grimaud performed in their ballroom, which accommodated 175 people - a complete sell-out! A large part of the attraction for this event is the intimacy of a private home and smaller concert. It feels more like a party than an impersonal "concert." We hope to find other great estates for the event each year.

The symphony's board of directors has invited 10 guest conductors to perform here with the symphony, in hopes of finding just the right match to replace longtime musical director Jung-Ho Pak, who stepped down at the end of last season. Yet for all the hoopla surrounding the guest conductor auditions, someone forgot to tell that to the symphony's first guest conductor, Miguel Harth-Bedoya.
