Extractions: Recorded in 1996, this disc captures an all-star quartet performing one of Dvorak's best chamber pieces, the Piano Quartet No. 2. Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma steal the show on this brooding but beautiful work. On "Sonatina in G Major," Stern gets his time in the spotlight, performing the work in a highly stylized and sophisticated fashion along with pianist Robert McDonald. "Gershwin" Fazil Say's take on the music of George Gershwin is not for the faint of heart, but it is engrossing. On Gershwin's piano miniatures, Say proves he can improvise as well as any jazz musician, and on the two longer works"Rhapsody in Blue" and "I Got Rhythm Variations"the pianist and the New York Philharmonic breathe new life into these warhorses. His side-by-side takes of "Summertime"one reflective, one dizzyingare a highlight. Felix Mendelssohn's string quintets are sadly overlooked, but this new disc by period instrument group L'Archibudelli sheds plenty of light on these graceful works. Though 20 years separate the two string quintets, there's no denying that they're both beautiful masterpiecesthe first is melodic and warm, while the second is energetic and more complex. Great playing and a perfect balance between the instruments make this CD a must-have for Mendelssohn lovers.

University Of Chicago Presents to a hugely active solo career. For his first Chicago appearance heteams up with the fiery young French pianist helene grimaud. http://chicagopresents.uchicago.edu/chamber.html
Extractions: At once abstract and deeply personal, chamber music has always been the medium through which the great composers have expressed their most urgent feelings and desires. From Beethoven's anguished and exalted "Song of Thanksgiving" (Op. 132) and Smetana's vividly autobiographical string quartet ("From My Life") to the heartfelt outpourings of songs by Dvorak and Debussy, these works are windows on the artist's most private musings - their most intimate voices. The University of Chicago Presents' 2002-03 season is marked by these "intimate voices" from artists worldwide. Whether it be the haunting sound of a solo cello or the seamless beauty of mezzo-soprano Susan Graham on the Chamber Music Series, the season is bursting with song. Once again, the world's most revered musicians grace the stage of Mandel Hall performing music that speaks to us all. As always, we are committed to presenting significant, even daring, debuts, giving Chicagoans their first opportunity to hear some of the musicians that have emerged at the vanguard of music-making worldwide. The intimate circle of composer, performer and listener is only closed when you come to share in the experience. Don't miss a note!

Extractions: Chicago music lovers got an unexpected present on Valentine's Day. Emmanuel Pahud is a charming, good-looking, phenomenally talented young Swiss-French flutist who has been winning acclaim as a soloist during a 20-month sabbatical from his post as principal flute at the Berlin Philharmonic. Friday night he was scheduled to do a recital of flute and piano sonatas by Mozart, Schumann, Poulenc and Brahms with pianist Helene Grimaud at University of Chicago's Mandel Hall. A charming, good-looking, phenomenally talented young French pianist, Grimaud is Pahud's regular recital partner. When the large audience arrived at Mandel for the 8 p.m. concert, they found Pahud but not Grimaud. A combination of security scares and delayed flights had turned her simple flight from Westchester, Conn., to Chicago into a daylong, four-airport odyssey. An hour before concert time she was stuck at O'Hare trying to locate her luggage after finally arriving in Chicago on a delayed flight from Columbus, Ohio. Moving to Plan B, Mandel Hall threw together one of those concerts that audiences will still be talking about years later. Calls around town didn't turn up a substitute pianist, but they did reach one of Pahud's good musical friends, Mathieu Dufour, the charming, good-looking, phenomenally talent young Frenchman who is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's principal flute. With the CSO having performed Friday afternoon, Dufour agreed to help his colleague keep the audience happy Friday night until Grimaud arrived.
