THOSE WE LOST IN THE ARTS - 2002 With the closing of another year comes the reminder that in the past twelve months we lost far too many representatives of the arts and humanities. Here are the names of many that are mourned and will be missed. Through the year I collect and clip obituaries from various sources and muse over their accomplishments until at years end I can print the entire list. Some of these individuals were personal friends, others people I admired and would like to have known. More than a few have influenced my work and thinking. A few on this list are rogues but deserving of memory, some giants in more than one field. They are of every color and nationality; and because death is no respecter of age or circumstance the youngest to go was the 20 year old actor Josh Ryan Evans, the oldest the writer Diana Gaines, and the pianist Vlado Perlemuter at 98.

Extractions: A Thought for Today Genius doesnt need to jitterbug. I have had so many responses to yesterdays flight plan that Ive decided to leave it up for another day, besides fame is so transitory who knows when some of the names on this list will see print again? For anyone who wishes to share thoughts on those who passed during 2002 I plan to print selected letters over the weekend. As a further remembrance I have added Birch Trees, my adagio for piano and orchestra, as a download today. For those unfamiliar with my music in the classical idiom Ill expand on the track later in the week. It is a further irony that Yevengey Svetlanov, who conducted this recording of Birch Trees, is on the list of those lives we celebrate. He died on May 3rd. Another poem from Suspension Bridge follows the list. Extractions: Methodist Church, March 29, 12:15 p.m. Ongoing Projects Stained Glass Window Restoration Our long-awaited stained-glass renovation has begun! We anticipate that this will be a project of many years, but worth the wait. A small window near the front entrance is restored, and two large windows (1 is shown above) in the sanctuary are also finished. Another in the parlor is currently scheduled to be restored soon. Our contractor for this work is a noted stained glass studio, ShadeTree Studios of Petoskey. More windows will be restored as funds are available. Some members have expressed an interest in funding a window restoration as a memorial or honorarium. Small brass plaques will identify the restoration donor below the chosen window. On a sunny morning, stop in and gaze in wonder! When the church is lit up for evening events is another gazing opportunity from the exterior. Concerts and the Piano Our new concert grand piano has been receiving rave reviews! The arrival of our new piano also brought with it a new outreach venture, Chelsea Musical Celebrations [CMC]. This non-profit organization is dedicated to providing area residents with the opportunity to enjoy first-class musical entertainment at an affordable cost. Marsha Rinke, our Music Director, also heads up CMC.

Extractions: The Bronx Dance Theater, which had been located at 286 E. 204th Street for the last 14 years, quietly and unexpectedly closed its doors recently to the surprise and disappointment of many residents of the community. Some residents expressed shock at the first sight of the Webster Avenue Furniture store that quickly took its place. When reached at her new office, Barbara Klein, artistic director and founder of the Bronx Dance Theater, said the company was no longer able to meet the high rent and was forced to move to its new location at 585 E. 187th Street, between Arthur Avenue and Hoffman Street. The Bronx Dance Theater was founded in 1976 and spent its first 10 years on the Grand Concourse near Fordham Road, before moving to E. 204th Street and Bainbridge Avenue. Besides offering live theater performances to the public, such as the annual Nutcracker Christmas show, according to Klein, they provided probably the best dance teaching and performing opportunity in the borough.
