Western Front Online: Play Us A Song, Piano Man The Western Front Renowned pianist arthur greene delivered an incredible, passionateperformance at 8 pm Monday in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. http://westernfront.wwu.edu/2000/April/accent2907.html
Extractions: Renowned pianist Arthur Greene delivered an incredible, passionate performance at 8 p.m. Monday in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. Greene's was the second recital in the 1999-2000 Arthur Hicks Piano Scholarship Series. The performance showcased Greene's immense talent along with subtle displays of fire and emotion. Jeffery Gilliam, a faculty member of Western's music department, called the performance one of the best we've had in this series. Greene's performance centered on several sonatas by Alexander Scriabin, whom the program cited as an artist Greene has a particular liking for. A faculty member of the University of Michigan's School of Music, Greene peppered his performance with a brief history of Scriabin. He mused that Scriabin studied with the same tutor as Rachmaninof, who Greene referred to as the ultra romantic. He also explained that in Scriabin's music, one can find elements of romance but also a hint of craziness. He imagined there would be a deep connection between audience and performer, Gilliam said Scriabin's theory is almost like a psychedelic piano trip.

Eight pianists will divide the set, each performing four sonatas, between Oct. 5, 2001 and April 19, 2002 in Emory's Performing Arts Studio. "The 32 pieces express the joy and suffering, sensuality and spirituality that make Beethoven one of the most enduring and popular composers of all time," says series organizer William Ransom, the Mary Emerson Professor of Music and artistic director of the Emory Chamber Music Society. Having eight different artists perform the cycle will provide different perspectives on the body of music, says Ransom. "This is one of the most exciting projects I have been involved in, and I am thrilled to be able to put it together for Atlanta."
