Extractions: Welcome to the Glenn Gould: A Perspective web page which I hope will be of interest to admirers of Glenn Gould's work. I suppose I am more or less an ordinary GG fan. Back around 1990 I borrowed a copy of the 1982 Goldberg Variations and since that time have listened to and enjoyed many of his recordings. I have also accumulated a nice collection of old Gould phonograph albums, one CD, Geoffrey Payzant's and Friedrich's book, a guide to the 1988 National Library GG exhibition, and a 1954 newspaper review. Another little treasure of mine are two musical scores, unmarked with no marginalia unfortunately, which are stamped "From the collection of Glenn Gould " that I purchased at a Friends of the National Library booksale. Less tangible but a gift of greater value was my renewed interest in classial music that Gould's albums inspired in me. Learning about Gould's life has also provided me with a fun diversion from raising my three children. Readers of this page are invited to send additional information and Glenn Gould anecdotes with which I might improve some of these articles. Send suggestions to mcdavids@pipsc.ca.

His family was a musical one: Edvard Grieg was a first cousin of his mother's grandfather, his father is an amateur violinist, and his mother played piano and organ. His mother was his only music/piano teacher until he was ten. When he was three years old it became evident that he possessed exceptional music abilities, including absolute pitch and even the ability to read staff notation. Robert Fulford, a distinguished Canadian author, met Glenn when they were both nine, when his family moved next door to the Goulds, he wrote... "Even as a child Glenn was isolated because he was working like hell to be a great man. He had a tremendous feeling and loving affection for music... It was an utter, complete feeling. He knew who he was and where he was going."

Extractions: The pianist Glenn Gould (1932-1982) profoundly affected the way people hear, perceive and appreciate music in one of the most unique and fascinating careers in the modern history of classical music. For most of his mature career, Gould did not perform live, reaching his audience instead through a remarkable legacy of recordings and broadcasts now heard exclusively on Sony Classical. On the evening of January 11, 1955, Gould made his debut in New York "Debutown," as he called it and the next day signed a recording contract with Columbia Masterworks (CBS), which would become Sony Classical in 1986. Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations took place at the CBS studios in June of 1955. The record won instant acclaim, became a bestseller, and launched the pianist's career as a fully mature international artist. Gould went on to make over sixty recordings for the label. Glenn Gould was born in Toronto on September 25, 1932, into a musical family: Edvard Grieg was a first cousin of his mother's grandfather, his father was an amateur violinist, and his mother played piano and organ. Gould's mother was his only teacher until he was ten. When he was three years old, it became evident that he possessed exceptional musical aptitude, including absolute pitch and even the ability to read staff notation. Extractions: Legendary pianist Glenn Gould plays and discusses Bach's The Art of the Fugue The three new releases include Gould's performance of excerpts from J.S. Bach's The Art of the Fugue Using Sony Classical's 20-bit Super-Bit-Mapping technology, the Glenn Gould Edition has restored the pianist's recorded legacy so successfully that Classic CD wrote, "Gould's recorded oeuvre may well be the single greatest musical monument of its kind this century." The German magazine FonoForum added, "The sonic restoration of these recordings provides near-audiophile quality... these discs sound great. Mono recordings from the 1950s sound as though they were made yesterday... The result, overall, is a big, wide-ranging sound; we seem much closer to the piano, and its tone has all the body and resonance of most recent recordings."
For Gould fans, the most important of these three releases will be the disc of Baroque keyboard music, recorded between 1959 and 1980. It includes performances of Bach's music available for the first time, including "Concerto in B-flat major" (after Marcello), BWV 974; "Fugue in B minor" on a theme by Tomaso Albinoni, BWV 951; "Fugue in A major" on a theme by Tomaso Albinoni, BWV 950; "Aria and Variations in A minor" in the Italian Manner, BWV 989; "Chromatic Fantasia in D minor", BWV 903; "Fantasia in G minor", BWV 917; "Fantasia in C minor", BWV 919; and "Fantasia (and Fugue) in C minor", BWV 906. Also included is Gould's 1959 recording of Bach's

Extractions: Gould, Glenn Gould, Glenn, , Canadian pianist and composer. A prodigy, he began study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto at 12. He was piano soloist with the Toronto Symphony at 14, and by the time he was 19 he was making concert tours in Canada, soon becoming known for idiosyncratic performance behavior. A great pianist, Gould was particularly noted for his interpretations of Bach and the romantics. As a composer, Gould was influenced by the postromantic music of the late 19th cent. His first published composition, a string quartet, had its premiere on television in 1956. During the 1960s Gould reduced his concert appearances to a minimum, preferring thereafter to concentrate on recording. See biographies by O. Friedrich (1989) and P. F. Ostwald (1997).

Sherbrooke Record: Glenn Gould Comes To Town Celebrated eccentric pianist comes to town. On November 14, 1955,Canadian concert pianist glenn gould performed in Sherbrooke. It http://members.tripod.com/~Hughdoherty/gould.htm
Extractions: On November 14, 1955, Canadian concert pianist Glenn Gould performed in Sherbrooke. It was relatively early in his career, and the first time he had appeared in the city. He had not yet achieved his world-wide fame. Sherbrooke did not have a proper concert hall then; the auditorium of the St. Charles Seminary was used for such occasions. It was really like a university convocation hall long and narrow with a flat, wooden floor and a plain wooden stage. I recall that the acoustics of the place were quite good. I was assigned to review the concert for the Record. Here is what appeared in the paper the next day: By HUGH DOHERTY Glenn Gould, hunched on an ordinary chair over the keyboard of his grand piano, drew murmurs of comment from the first Sherbrooke Symphony Concert audience of the season at St. Charles Auditorium last night. The brilliant 23-year-old Toronto-born pianist presented a fantastic figure. Unkempt, sandy hair tossing wildly, he jerked rhythmically with the music of the orchestra. His long, thin arms dangled limply at his sides, almost touching the stage floor. When he launched into the opening bars of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, he closed his eyes, tilted his head, and swayed low over the keys. Those who weren't busy buzzing about his gestures heard one of the most masterfully-played piano concertos ever to be performed in Sherbrooke. Gould's technique and mechanical skill have already been hailed by critics throughout North America. It was obvious last night why.
