Extractions: Department of Translation Studies, University of Tampere "On the world map, Finland is a tiny country; but on the world map of contemporary music, Finland is a superpower. Thanks to Jean Sibelius, music occupies a central position in Finnish society. Over the past 30 years Finnish music life has enjoyed a unique boom. New operas, orchestral works and chamber music works are being commissioned and performed continuously." ( Contemporary Music 1. The Roots of the Musical Success of the Finns 1.1 A Brief History of the Finnish Art Song: Pacius, Collan and Fabritius Sibelius (1865-1957) Johan Julius Christian Sibelius (Janne for the family, Jean used as a professional name from 1886) is the most famous Finnish composer - and one could also say one of the most famous Finns - of all times. Not only in Finland but also in the history of music as a whole, he is one of the most important writers of symphonies and tone poems. Sibelius' role as the national composer was especially important because he had the ability to express Finnish legends, history and landscape in a unique way through his music. His position as a Finnish national romanticist is what he has for long been best known for in many countries. He was indeed a very important figure in Finland's strive towards independence, but he was also a modernist and a pioneer in the forms and textures of orchestral and piano music (Murtomäki). But was there also some good fortune involved with his becoming such a great figure in the field of contemporary music? Notwithstanding his genius, one can say that he was definitely born in the right place at the right time. At the time of Sibelius' birth, the centuries-long connection between Finland and Sweden had been broken for nearly 40 years, and Finland had started to seek its own national identity as an autonomous part of the Russian Empire (Murtomäki).

Lipsanen Art Collection | Collector's Profile life. Especially the cooperation with the pianist, conductor and composerRalf gothoni has proved out to be very fruitful. In 1986 http://www.kolumbus.fi/lipsanengroup/gallery/collector.html
Extractions: Collecting is a way to pass on information and knowledge. Juhani Lipsanen's first objects of collecting were antique weapons and peasant utensils. It was the ability of craftsmen to bring esthetics into everyday life and to create objects that were both functional and beautiful in a timeless way that intrigued the young man. Guns and swords, tools of destruction, removed from their violent purpose of being spoke of different cultures and of the strangeness of human beings to include a sliver of esthetics not only to living but to dying as well. The stark beauty of peasant handicrafts evoked the presence of personal history - in the grooves and indentations the thumbprints of the makers and the users of the everyday objects could be felt. It was then when one of the main reasons for collecting crystallized in Juhani Lipsanen's mind: collecting was a way to remember and preserve. Collecting enables one to stand in the intersection of the international, the national and the personal. Collecting art is a thought process, a way to learn from life by assembling and reassembling esthetic objects, an avenue to striking visions and endless questions.
Elina Vähälä, Violinist to Elina Vähälä perform the third movement of the Debussy Sonata (with pianistMinna Kivilä) (1 ralf gothoni, Concerto Grosso for Violin, Piano and Strings. http://www.yca.org/vahala.html
Extractions: "The Finnish violinist Elina Vähälä gave a decisive and spirited debut. A thoughtful musician, she has all the technical accomplishment and confidence she needs to project her thoughts. Her intonation is sure and her tone fine, going all the way from a grainy, almost reedy insistence, but perfectly formed, to soft dabs of sounds. This range of color was especially useful in the Debussy Sonata - she made musical poetry with a nice robust edge to it. In her performance of the Brahms Sonata in D Minor, her delicacy of sound and rhythm in the third movement was marvelous. In the highly musical reading of this work, she breathed each movement, and even the whole sonata, as one." "Elina Vähälä is a very good violinist with a solid technique and a pure, focused tone. Her reading of the Debussy Sonata was flexible and colorful. In the Brahms Sonata, she produced a lovely, warm, sustained tone in the slow movement, and the third movement was very driven and virtuosic. She really came into her own with a very striking, convincing performance of Preludes from Op. 34 by Shostakovich, arranged by Tsyganov. Vähälä's strong affinity for the music gave her tone resonance and variety and her playing had spontaneity, fire and expressiveness."
