Extractions: Credit where credit's due: It took guts for Billy Joel to title this recording of his first classical piano compositions . That's more than a gilt-edged invitation, it's an outright plea to critics to be snotty, to have some malicious fun at his expense. There's no way he could have been oblivious to the danger; he knows he's daring us to knock the chip off his shoulder. It isn't completely clear why an enterprise of this sort invites that kind of sneering, but it does, frequently and almost irresistibly. Perhaps because the history of popular musicians trying their hand at classical composition is a melancholy one. (Musicians who are primarily performers rather than composers have managed the transition more smoothly; Neil Sedaka played a creditable Chopin back in the early '60s, and

Apparently Billy Joel will NOT be inducted in this years ceremony. I'd like to make some comments here about the judging, but it'd be heavily biased. Anyways, check out the story to see just who was behind the rumor. Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, the Mamas and the Papas, Lloyd Price, Santana, and Gene Vincent will be inducted though. Here's the entire article Update from Billboard on Broadway Possibility (Friday, October 10, 1997) Posted by: Todd Meanwhile, published reports have stated that the Piano Man will write a musical for Broadway. When asked if such a production is in the works, Joel says that anything is possible but not to expect details in the immediate future. "I have discussed the possibility of a Broadway musical based on my songs with several Broadway production people," he says. "Anything that has transpired to date is purely exploratory and pre-workshop. Accordingly, we are not encouraging speculation right now, but don't rule anything out."
