Lady Lipworth, the co-chairman with Jonathon Lyons of the JMI, paid her own tribute to the efforts of Mrs Auerbach, and referred to the establishment of the institute at SOAS as 'an ideal marriage.' Sir Tim Lankester, the director of SOAS, welcomed the JMI to SOAS, adding that he believed the study of Jewish music at the school would act as the bridge between the school's studies of Asian and African cultures, and he was confident that the presence of the institute would do much to enrich the musical life of the campus.

Wolfe's new musical "Harlem Song", a celebration of the community's history and culture, began previews at the Apollo Theater on July 8th, with the opening night on August 4th. The 16-person ensemble is a combination of veteran singers and dancers as well as talented newcomers. The cast includes B.J. Crosby, Queen Esther, David St. Louis, Rosa Evangelina Arredondo, Renee Monique Brown, Gabriel A. Croom, Rosa Curry, Randy A. Davis, DeLandis McClam, Erich McMillan-McCall, Sinclair Mitchell, Zoie Morris, DanaShavonne Rainey, Stacey Sargeant, Keith Lamelle Thomas and Charles E. Wallace. "Harlem Song" is a joyous musical celebration that transports its audience through time, bringing to life the brilliant energy, history, music and cultural heritage of Harlem. With a live band on stage, as well as historical photographs and multi-media footage, the cast sings and dances their way through the twentieth century, recreating the events and places that have defined Harlem. Music from the show ranges from jazz to swing, gospel to soul. Songs featured include "Drop Me Off in Harlem" by Duke Ellington and Nick Kenny, "Shake" by Sam Cooke, "That's What The Well-Dressed Man In Harlem Will Wear" by Irving Berlin and "Take The A Train" by Billy Strayhorn. Deadly Blessing-Devil Times Five DEATH WISH V THE FACE OF DEATH (1994)Directed by Allan A. goldstein. also bondwith the rest of the squadron, including melancholy pianist Machaty (Oldrich http://pimannix.tripod.com/martysmarquee/id49.html
Extractions: D DEADLY BLESSING (1981)Directed by Wes Craven. Stars Maren Jensen, Sharon Stone, Ernest Borgnine, Susan Buckner, Douglas Barr. An image from the original trailer of a big, ugly spider being dropped into Sharon Stone's mouth is one I haven't forgotten in almost 20 years. One of Craven's earliest horror films is also one of his best, despite a silly and confusing final scene. A young widow (Jensen, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) is comforted by old friends Stone (in only her second feature) and Buckner after her farmer husband (Barr) is killed in what seems to be an accident. Barr was raised by a strict Hittite sect led by his father Isaiah (Borgnine), but was cast out when he married an outsider. As the bodies continue to pile up, the Hittites, who accuse Jensen of being an incubus (a woman who seduces men pure of heart), become the leading suspects. Craven, aided by some wonderfully lush photography by Robert Jessup, provides many decent scares, including a creepy bathtub scene and an edge-of-your-seat climax. I'm not exactly sure what was going on in that final scene, or why the killer continues to murder the rest of the cast after the first victim, but I liked this movie anyway. The cast is uniformly good (and the three female leads look fantastic), and the music by James Horner, who was becoming a genre vet after providing the scores to WOLFEN, THE HAND and HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, heightens the suspense (while cribbing some licks from THE OMEN).

Extractions: M MEATBALLS (1979)Directed by Ivan Reitman. Stars Bill Murray, Chris Makepeace, Kristen DeBell. Silly but funny low-budget comedy stars Murray in his first major film role as a summer camp counselor. PG-rated movie is not as raunchy as other youth comedies of the period. Made lots of money, and not only put Murray on the map, but director Reitman as well. He went on to STRIPES and GHOSTBUSTERS (also with Murray), and TWINS and DAVE (without). David Naughton and L.A. DJ Rick Dees have bits. Music by Elmer Bernstein. THE MECHANIC (1972)Directed by Michael Winner. Stars Charles Bronson, Jan-Michael Vincent, Jill Ireland, Keenan Wynn. Crude and violent actioner starring Bronson as a mob hitman who trains a cocky young protg (Vincent) during assignments in L.A. and Italy. Eventually Vincent is assigned to rub out his mentor. Features some pretty good action scenes and nice Italian scenery. MEDIUM COOL (1969)Directed by Haskell Wexler. Stars Robert Forster, Verna Bloom, Peter Bonerz. Riveting semi-documentary about a Chicago television reporter (Forster) covering the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the rioting that accompanied. If critics think today's cinema has a Democratic slant, they should check this out. Wexler, who also wrote, produced and photographed, made such a left-wing political film that the MPAA gave it a ludicrous X rating (supposedly because of some brief nudity, but really because of its politics), and Paramount refused to release it for over a year. By then, the rioting was old news, and the film didn't have as much impact. Much of the film was actually shot during the riots; in fact, in one scene, the cast and crew are actually tear-gassed by Chicago policemen. A valuable history lesson and a good drama too. Keep an eye out for Marianna Hill and Peter Boyle. Future director Andrew Davis (THE FUGITIVE) was an assistant cameraman.

Extractions: Efforts to document the Holocaust began while it was still happening. This documentary was filmed by a unit of the British Army in the spring of 1945. It recorded the actual moments at which prisoners in Nazi concentration camps were liberated, including interviews with camp survivors. Considered too controversial at the time, it was not publicly viewed until the 1980s. The film sketches Hitler's rise to power, then provides gruesome details of concentration and extermination camps such as Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, Buchenwald and Auschwitz. Besides on-scene comments by British troops, A Painful Reminder follows the stories of several Jewish survivors and carefully shows German municipal officials and citizens at the death camps. The film addresses the post-war political considerations that led to its being shelved for so many years. Michael teaches his family all about the Jewish holidays. They willingly take part in celebrating Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, but Sukkot poses a problem. "We just can't build a sukkah," says his father. With scissors and paper, Michael shows everyone how in a magical story with special effects and a surprise ending.

Extractions: Paul Ben-Haim received a conventional European musical upbringing. He was born Paul Frankenburger in Munich where his father was a lawyer. He studied piano and composition at the Munich Academy and was a renowned conductor. By 1931 he was able to devote himself increasingly to composition. When the Nazis came to power in 1933 he settled in Palestine and took the Hebraic name of Ben-Haim. It was perhaps through working as arranger and accompanist for Braha Zephira, a singer of Yemeni descent, that he became quickly attracted to oriental music, particularly the folk music of Palestine and Yemen, though he himself was at pains to point out "I dont actually take melodies. I invent them. It is now my language influenced by my surroundings." When listening to the Finale of the 2 nd Symphony and the Piano Concerto, you might be entitled to think otherwise.
