Untitled New international CD by gelenbe. A new CD by acclaimed the Turkish chambermusician, pianist deniz arman gelenbe, was released this year. http://www.turkishdailynews.com/past_probe/01_10_97/featurep.htm
Extractions: 1996 was a colorful year in Turkey, hosting international musicians in jazz, classical music and rock. Prominent Turkish talents performed throughout Turkey and abroad. Turkish pop went into convulsions, and we lost our "Pasa." Here Turkish Probe covers the music events of the year. Turkey welcomed many important names in music during 1996. The Parliament Superband Jazz Festival, which was held in mid-1996, hosted important jazz musicians like Wayne Shorter, sax master, composer and orchestra conductor; five-time Grammy Award-winner Al Jarreau, with his silky voice and original music; and the nine-times Grammy Award-winner David Sanborn, who has contributed to the music world as a composer, instrumentalist and creative power in music. Turkish tenor saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin, who has been living in New York for the last 10 years, also performed to Turkish jazz lovers in Istanbul. Reminiscent of Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson with his sax style, Ersahin is ready to become one of the young stars of the jazz world. Ersahin defines his music as "acoustic jazz." World famous pianist Yefim Bronfman played in Istanbul at the Cemal Resit Bey Concert Hall on Oct. 17, and in Ankara with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 19. Bronfman was born in Tashkent and took refuge in Israel from the then USSR with his family when he was fourteen. At the age of fifteen he went to New York with the help of violinist Isaac Stern. In 1992 Bronfman returned to the USSR in order to play for Presidents Bush and Gorbachev in a concert conducted by Isaac Stern.

For details, contact cvnc.org. Lyman Dazzles Carswell by John W. Lambert The program was a Pan-American affair, given without an intermission, that lasted precisely one hour. Intermission-less concerts that aren't too long have their points. Some students and even critics who from time to time watch the clock tend to be pleased when "classes" are dismissed early; and particularly since Lyman's was an all-20th-century program, omitting the break kept everyone on hand till the end of the show. It's a safe bet that, in this case, few if any people were disappointed. The music was attractive and immediately accessible. Ginastera's Tres Piezas, explained in some informative but uncredited program notes that were clearly by Lyman, are rooted in folk music and reflect the nationalism the composer espoused in the 1940s. That each of the three pieces depicts a different type of woman provided one more example of Lyman's skill as a program maker, for Meredith's "Year of Music" offerings celebrate women more often than not. Lyman realized the three short numbers with keen insight, projecting a great deal of character in each. They seemed strangely Debussyian in terms of mood and color but the dynamics were wide-ranging. Indeed, the second section, "Norteña," was in places so quiet that the piano came close to being obscured by ambient noise in the hall itself.
