NPR: Performance Today -- Pianist Jeremy Denk you have one Eureka moment when you knew you'd be a pianist? Impromptus; 7) fischerDieskau/Moore Winterreise from the 60's; 8) edwin fischer Bach's Well http://www.npr.org/programs/pt/4a/denk.html
Extractions: Denk is an acclaimed performer with recital credits from New York's Alice Tully Hall to Washington's Kennedy Center. A faculty member at Indiana University while still a doctoral candidate at The Juilliard School, he's also made numerous appearances at Marlboro, Aspen, Caramoor, and other renowned music festivals. Meet the newest member of our PT family in our and be sure catch Denk on PT this week from April 23-27. Denk: My parents are music lovers but not musicians. They listen to a lot of NPR. When I was little they played a few classical records all the time; particularly I remember a "Greatest Hits" album with the "Hallelujah" Chorus, the slow movement of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony, Bach's "Air on the G String," and other things. There was also a lot of John Denver and Judy Collins and Neil Diamond in my early youth, I am slightly embarrassed to say ("Song Sung Blue," "Leavin' on a Jet Plane," "Send in the Clowns.") My dad failed his class in guitar at New Mexico State (he claims this is the only class he has ever failed). My brother loves music but not the same music that I love; he has gigged around in a band in Houston, but it is not his "day job."

Nowadays, he is applauded in all the world´s great concert halls, from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. He makes extensive concert tours on all continents, plays with leading orchestras and can be found in the recording studios of the celebrated record companies. In either words, Paul Badura-Skoda is one of the most important pianists of our time. One thing has remained with him from his early professional interests - the desire to 'look behind the scenes', to understand the functioning and the impact of great musical works and, in playing them, to make the preception accessible to others. In this critical appraisal first editions and autographs are compared, the text deviations investigated and historical instruments are used. Not only does he play music, he also reflects on it, producing numerous cadenzas to Mozart concerti and style-sensitive completions of unfinished works by Mozart and Schubert. The musical personality of Badura-Skoda is characterized by complete immersion in music, a passionate search for the essential and a sense of artistic responsability, but not in a technical or academical sense. 'Paul Badura-Skoda makes us feel something which is rare in a professional musician - that he loves music with every part of his being', a critic once said.

Extractions: Paul Badura-Skoda is one of the most important pianists of our time: a legendary artist who has played in all the world's greatest concert halls, and for years was the pianist who had the largest number of commercial recordings available in the market. His musical personality is characterized by complete immersion in music, a passionate search for the essence, and a sense of artistic responsibility. It soon becomes evident to any listener that he loves music with every part of his being. In 1945 Badura-Skoda entered the Vienna Conservatory and two years later won first prize in the Austrian Music Competition and a scholarship which allowed him to study with Edwin Fischer. These years laid the foundation for Badura-Skoda's artistic future. In 1949 Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan became aware of Badura-Skoda's outstanding talent and invited him to perform. Practically overnight the young Viennese pianist became a world-famous artist. Since then Badura-Skoda has been a regular and celebrated guest at the most important music festivals and a soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras. In addition to Furtwängler and von Karajan, he has collaborated with such renowned conductors as George Szell, Karl Böhm, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Georg Solti, and John Eliot Gardiner.

Extractions: Home Teaching Philosophy References ... Contact Do you speak Chinese? Probably not. It might be a fascinating subject to study, but unless you are from a Chinese background, or were a particularly gifted student in this field it would most likely seem quite foreign. Many of us do feel a connection to a language other than English, perhaps Hebrew or Italian. We may not be fluent in it but it carries an emotional resonance; we feel a connection to it (as would a Chinese person to his language). I like to think of music in these terms; as language. And I'd like my students to have the opportunity to hear and feel music at least as closely as a second language; closer perhaps, since there are no words! A lifetime of listening to music has helped me to enjoy it as I do. So I thought a list of recommended recordings and artists might help my students and their parents find some of the music that's "spoken" to me over the years. Unlike practicing, which must be organized and disciplined, this listening is just for enjoyment, though it can lead to thinking, enthusiasm, mellowness (depending on the music at hand!) and increased appreciation for the arts. It can become part of the atmosphere of your home. And, especially if a child has not yet "learned" that classical music is "boring", a parent's interest can send a signal to a child that it may be something worthwhile.

Extractions: . . . . our conjectures would be quite different if we were living in the 1920s instead of the 1980s. Similarly 18th- and 19th-century descriptions of tempo rubato make a very different sort of sense if we take early, rather than late, 20th-century style as the starting point for comparison. My own very strong suspicion is that many of the habits preserved in early gramophone records had their origins at least as far back as Beethoven, and in some cases earlier. This is something to argue about, but one central point is indisputable: the styles of the early 20th century did not arise overnight. For this reason, if for no other, it is time for historically minded performers to start considering the implications of early gramophone records." Robert Philip
