Extractions: This is just a compilation of links, with a strong emphasis on classical music, and on piano in particular. I've not written reviews of them, I don't necessarily endorse them, they're not listed in any particular order. I just present them here to share with others who might find at least some of them to be useful. With two exceptions I can't resist recommending these two: 1. If you're looking for free classical sheet music, I recommend you try first at The Sheet Music Archive 2. If you're looking for MIDI files of classical music, I recommend you try first at the Classical Music Archives Some of the links may no longer work. I haven't had time to update this list for quite a while, and I probably won't be able to find time for it for the next couple of months either. So if a link here doesn't work, please don't email me about it. I'm already aware that the page needs updating, and I'll do it as soon as I can. I hope you'll enjoy many of the sites listed here. The brilliant pianist Esteban Sanchez plays works by the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz, including his Sonata No. 5 and Recuerdos de viaje (Memories of a journey). The latter is a wonderfully evocative series of postcards in sound. These impressions of landscapes and people predate his more famous Iberia, and the dramatic music with its sweeping rhythms and melodies is explored to splendid effect on this new recording. PAT THOMAS - NUR EMANEM 4046. London-born pianist and composer Pat Thomas plays four completely improvised pieces in this digital concert recording in the chapel at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education. The works are called Nur (an Arabic word meaning light), Mubarak (Arabic for a very blessed person), Variation on Two Themes and The Analogy (reflecting the performers debt to the music of jazz genius Thelonius Monk). Extractions: No other German pianist in the 20th century had a similar international career like Walter Gieseking. He made several concert tours around the world, he made hundreds of radio appearances, he had an extensive recording career, he authored several books - some are still in print today - ,and he was revered by audiences and critics alike. Gieseking was born in France of German parentage. Athough his father was a medical doctor ,he never practised medicine. Instead he more or less successfully earned his money as a freelance entomologist. Since catching butterflies and preparating them involved a lot of travelling through sparsely populated regions, little Walter never went to school. This did not prevent him from teaching himself to read and write. Walter autodidactically learned everything he could put his hand on, even mathematics. Usually a piano was also availabe, so Gieseking taught himself to play and within a reasonably short time he was able to play the complete Bach and many works of other composers. He got acquainted with the music of Richard Wagner and played whole operas from score. Like his father he was an ardent entomologist. Two butterfly subspecies are named after Gieseking: Giesekingiana and Walteri. Gieseking accumulated an enormous repertoire while studying with Leimer . It included many works of Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven. He performed the complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas in six concerts in 1915/1916.

Having already graduated with full marks, full honours and distinction from the 'Giuseppe Verdi' State Conservatoire of Music in Milan in 2000, he continues his studies there on a post-graduate course. He has achieved remarkable success in many prestigious international competitions. These include 1st Prize at the 17th 'Cidade de Porto' in Portugal, and 2nd Prize (1st Prize was not awarded) in the 24th International 'Alessandro Casagrande' Competition in Terni in 2000, 1st Prize in the 1st Sendai International Piano Competition in Japan, and 1st Prize at the 18th 'A. Casella' in Naples in 2001. In 2001 he also won the 18th 'Premio Venezia'. 2002 has brought him an outstanding victory in the London International Piano Competition. Giuseppe Andaloro has performed throughout Italy and abroad as soloist and in concerto performances with internationally acclaimed orchestras. These include the Pleven Philharmonic, Filarmonica of the Milan Conservatoire, Moldova Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Porto, Filarmonica Marchigiana, Sendai Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Extractions: Fifteen consecutive editions for a music festival is no mean feat, especially if we go back further in time to the musical tradition that had been firmly rooted in Sorrento. During the 1970s Sorrento had already played host to the "Incontri Musica1i Internazionali" out of which today's Summer Music Festival emerged in 1985. The success of this festival is even more remarkable if we think of the many performances that were hurriedly conceived in the early 1980s, only to be then lost in the troubled waters of the 1990s. The "Sorrento Summer Music Festival", organised by the Sorrento-Sant' Agnello Tourism Board, is sponsored by the Campania Region Department for Tourism and the Performing Arts. It also enjoys the patronage of the Council of Ministers and the Sorrento municipal authorities. With Maurizio Pietrantonio at the helm, as musician, artistic director, the brains and its driving force, the Festival has never lost sight of its course.

About Danacord Another estimable pianist currently in the Buhl camp is Geoffrey Douglas Madge thelikes of MarcAndre Hamelin, Bengt Forsberg, sergio fiorentino, Hamish Milne http://www.danacord.dk/aboutdana.html
Extractions: Jesper Buhl, Managing Director of Danacord, is a record enthusiast of the first order: in fact, it was his frustration with record companies' apathy that inspired him to found his own label in 1979. If there's anyone out there who feels jaded by the increasingly pressured business of classical CDs, I'd recommend a healthy dose of Jesper Buhl. Denmark's "man about CDs" inaugurated the Danacord label back in 1979 "as a protest against the current industry". He'd been studying piano at the Royal Danish Academy, needed some cash and took a job in a local record store. "I found myself looking out for records that didn't actually exist," he said, "and 1 asked the record companies why these records hadn't been made. "There would be no interest in them," they told me, "we'd be lucky to sell any!" So I thought, why not try and do it all myself? Then, I asked the companies' advice. "No way," they said, "don't even think about starting your own label ...". So I reckoned that if they had said that to me, they'd probably have said the same sort of thing to anyone else who wanted to start a record company. Hence the fact that for many years I had the market to myself." Commotio a Helios Overture under Fritz Busch, excerpts from the

This third release in Olympia's Popov series couples works from different ends of the composer's career. The suite was culled from music written for the 1932 propaganda film Komsomol is the Chief of Electrification (really) and contains five brief movements showing Popov's early musical personality: pungent orchestrations both virtuoso and highly personal, not without a hint of Prokofiev. The fifth symphony was written in 1956 and represented Popov's first effort at reclaiming his place in the Soviet musical firmament after Stalin's death. A massive work of five movements (Pastorale, Storm, Struggle, Hopes and a second Pastorale) the symphony shows Rimsky-Korsakov's influence in its superb orchestration as well as evident influences from Ravel and Prokofiev. Moscow Radio & TV SO; Edvard Chivzhel, USSR State SO; Gurgen Karapetian. St. Petersburg composer Boris Tishchenko's harp concerto makes its belated CD debut. One of Shostakovich's finest students, Tishchenko's music is concentrated, intense and expressive. Dating from 1977, the concerto, in 5 movements lasting 45 minutes, is predominantly inward-looking and treats the harp as a "first among equals" rather than as a virtuosic soloist. An unexpected touch is the use of a wordless soprano in its fourth movement Intermezzo.
