Janina Fialkowska (Piano) grace and style that surely inspired Montreal pianist janina fialkowska, who delivers a reading that is consistent, http://www.janinafialkowska.com/html/cds/paderewski.html
Extractions: Naxos 8.554020 Fialkowska brings dash and flair to this pairing of the two works Paderewski wrote for piano and orchestra. Neither (piece) escapes the influence of Chopin and Liszt, but there is a robustness of colouring, tinged with Polish folk inflections, which gives them a personal stamp. The vigorous piano writing, designed for maximum impact, gives opportunities for Fialkowska to display her own virtuosity. The Daily Telegraph (London, UK)

Extractions: Artist Profile Janina Fialkowska JANINA FIALKOWSKA, Pianist Born in Montreal to a Canadian mother and a Polish father, Janina Fialkowska began piano studies at the age of five. She entered the Ecole de Musique Vincent d'Indy, Montreal and studied privately in Paris. After pursuing advanced studies at New York's Juilliard School of Music, Janina Fialkowska was a top prize winner at the First International Arthur Rubinstein Master Piano Competition in Israel. It was Rubinstein himself who brought the music of Szymanowski to her attention. In 1992, the CBC produced a sixty-minute television documentary, "The World of Janina Fialkowska," that aired to great acclaim throughout Canada. This program was awarded a Special Jury Prize at the 1992 San Francisco International Film Festival. Janina Fialkowska's discography includes works by Chopin (RCA), Liszt, Moszkowski, Chopin and Peter Paul Koprowski (CBC SM5000) and Schubert's Schwanengesang, with bass-baritone Daniel Lichti, for Opening Day Recordings (ODR 9302). Extractions: Leading the Madison Symphony Orchestra's penultimate subscription concert pair for this season Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, guest conductor Janna Hymes-Bianchi displayed a detailed knowledge of the scores and a firm, vigorous hand on the baton. Her program was unusual but musically very interesting and technically extremely demanding. All four works fared better Sunday than on the previous evening. For stylistic reasons John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," an orchestral excerpt from his opera Nixon in China , takes a little getting used to, but its driving, extremely tricky rhythms create a trance-like state into which suddenly floats a dream-like character, as Jiang Ching and Mao Tzedong enjoy a nostalgic foxtrot from their simpler, revolutionary days. At the end, the music disappears in a thin wisp of pensiveness. I think that with greater familiarity, the piece would enjoy great appeal with the audience. Extractions: Beethoven penned the Piano Sonata in F major , the second of three published in 1798, a few short years after coming to Vienna to study composition with Haydn. From the very beginning, the uncouth young genius from northern Germany had the Viennese aristocracy eating out of his hand, compelling their admiration with his blazing keyboard skills and his utterly original gifts as a composer. Beethoven was at his most innovative and engaging when writing for the piano. He was particularly fascinated by the challenge of sonata form, and throughout the course of his life he took the sonata in directions old Haydn had never dreamt of. Indeed, the F-major Sonata , like Beethovens other early piano music, bears the unmistakable imprint of a young composer experimenting boldly with form and language, one who had already found his own distinctive voice. Although the buoyancy and graceful charm of this music, with its occasional flickers of mischief, is enjoyable on its own terms, it is also a poignant reminder that Beethoven was not always the irascible, tormented soul he came to be later in life.

Extractions: Lyn Bronson "Hello, Guinness Book of Records, I think we have a new speed record for a performance of classical piano music, maybe even faster than Volodos." This event took place on Saturday, January 6, at Sunset Center in Carmel, and was a piano recital by perennial Carmel Bach Festival favorite, Janina Fialkowska. Celebrating the first concert event on the Monterey Peninsula of the new millennium (the true one, not the much heralded fizzle that gave us all a Y2K scare a year ago), this concert was a part of the Bach Festival's off-season series called Bravissima that has been providing an interesting group of concerts at Sunset Center in Carmel.

Extractions: Lyn Bronson For many years Pianist Janina Fialkowksa has been a familiar presence at the Carmel Bach Festival. Her annual contribution to the Festival was a solo recital and a concerto appearance that won her the loyalty of many fans. However, in recent years the influence of concert-mistress/violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch seemed to propel Bach Festival recitals ever more firmly in the direction of period instruments, and the inevitable finally happened - the modern piano was banished from the Festival. In its place we have the modern piano's period equivalent, the "fortepiano" (the lightly strung precursor to the modern Steinway) that now plays a small, subordinate role in the Festival. Therefore, to the delight of her fans Janina Fialkowska returned for a recital engagement on Sunday afternoon, October 4th at Sunset Center in Carmel. This event was a fundraiser for the Carmel Bach Festival and was presented as one of the events of the Carmel Performing Arts Festival that dominates the month of October on the Monterey Peninsula. The fact that there were other Festival events taking place during the weekend may explain why only a small audience of approximately 200 people attended the concert.

Extractions: LONDON, ONT. - A Canadian concert pianist who faced a potentially career-ending illness is returning to the stage to perform with one hand. In January 2002, Janina Fialkowska was preparing for a concert in Germany featuring the music of Listz. That's when she noticed swelling in her upper left arm. "On Jan. 31, I was at Sloan Kettering, the cancer hospital in New York...and that's when I found out," said Fialkowska. While a tumour had wrapped itself around a muscle in her left arm, the good news was that it wasn't malignant. But Fialkowska learned she wouldn't be able to use her left arm until reconstructive surgery and months of therapy were completed. And even after that, she wasn't guaranteed she'd be able to return to the concert performance levels she'd reached.

She says the beauty of the pieces is one benefit of her situation. "The music is so wonderful," says Fialkowska. "The Prokofiev and Ravel are two magnificent pieces of music and this has forced me to learn them."
