CD Reviews: Musical Treasures - Diana Fanning, Pianist Some Reviews of "Musical Treasures" diana fanning, pianist Classical London 33 Classical London is distributed by The Classical Source (http//www.classicalsource.com) Another notable recent release comes from pianist diana fanning in a recital of solo piano music by Chopin, Debussy and http://www.ffaire.com/mp3/fanningrev.html
Extractions: Another notable recent release comes from pianist Diana Fanning in a recital of solo piano music by Chopin, Debussy and Janacek, including Janacek's On an Overgrown Path. The Janacek work is particularly successful and the sensitive performance brings out the subtle intensity of these sometimes elusive works. The work is released by Franck Publications (PO Box 96, Middlebury, Vermont 05753). (also available from amazon.com and CDNow.com) Diana Fanning's CD is a treasury of gentlest playing. She brings out the floral spirit of Macdowell in the fastidious poignancy and nostalgic poetry of the Janacek collection. This is Janacek the modest singer rather than Janacek the white-haired revolutionary magus. The playing and the work will appeal to anyone who is in touch with the understated lyricism of Dvorák. The flighty hazed fantasy of Ms Fanning's playing of Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse made me want to hear her in John Foulds' April-England and William Baines' Island of the Fey or Silverpoints. The Chopin (and all credit to Ms Fanning for avoiding a garland of smaller pieces) is done with the emphasis on gentle poetry and muted display. The liner notes show care and studiously avoid the language of the dreary technician. This music, these performances and the velvety acoustic bring out the warmer emotions. Bask contentedly.

Extractions: About Us Capital City Concerts: Pianist Michael Arnowitts Sept. 22 recital traces the dissolution of form September 14, 2001 By Jim Lowe Times Argus Arts Editor Classical music pieces are almost invariably much longer than those of their popular brethren, yet many of them have kept audiences interest for centuries. Montpelier pianist Michael Arnowitt explains, Classical composers try to write pieces of music that are longer than the three to four minutes of a pop song. How do composers do it? Arnowitts solo recital, which opens the 2001-2002 Capital City Concerts series, Saturday, Sept. 22, at Union Elementary School in Montpelier, does much to illustrate how. For many centuries, through the Baroque period (1600-1750) and up through Mozart and Beethoven, they often used the structure of speech and rhetoric, Arnowitt said. We speak in sentences, and we build sentences into paragraphs and paragraphs into sections. A lot of music of older times reflects that architecture. Johan Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), the great master of the Baroque, fits into this category, and Arnowitt will perform his French Suite No. 5 in G Major.

Extractions: About Us Davydov-Fanning Duo offers passion May 13, 2002 By Jim Lowe TIMES ARGUS ARTS EDITOR MONTPELIER Its no surprise that Vermont is home to some pretty fine musicians, but its always a pleasure to be reminded. Saturdays Capital City Concerts program at the Unitarian Church was a pleasurable reminder that Middleburys Davydov-Fanning Duo is one of our states treasures. Cellist Dieuwke Davydov and pianist Diana Fanning were joined by Montpelier flutist Karen Kevra in a program of some pretty substantial chamber music. Davydov and Fanning, who both teach at Middlebury College, have been performing regularly together for quite some time, including three forays to Europe. Both are excellent players, but their rapport with each other is particularly successful and natural. One of the two major works was Brahms Sonata No. 2 in F Major, Opus 99, for cello and piano. Its a big passionate work, and this dynamic duo delivered it with plenty of power. Davydovs cello manages to be both light and rich in flavor as does Fannings piano. Though there were a few moments when the passion waned, these two performed with drive and a natural expressiveness and musicality. The other major work was Carl Maria von Webers Trio, Opus 63, for flute, cello and piano. The work is quite unusual, not only for its instrumentation, but for its operatic flamboyance. Although all three could have afforded a bit more flamboyance overt expressiveness it was a powerful and rewarding performance, allowing each to enjoy an attractive virtuosity.

Davydov-Fanning Duo Return To Chandler Music Hall pianist diana fanning and cellist Dieuwke Davydov return to Randolph fresh from a concert tour of Europe, including http://www.ourherald.com/News/2001/0412/Arts/a01.html
Extractions: Pianist Diana Fanning and cellist Dieuwke Davydov return to Randolph fresh from a concert tour of Europe, including performances in Paris, Amsterdam, and The Hague. The duo will perform at Chandler Music Hall Sunday afternoon, April 22, at 3 p.m., as the final offering in the Arts in the Afternoon Series. Works to be performed include Beethovens operatic variations on a theme from "The Magic Flute" by Mozart; the beautiful "Adagio and Allegro" of Schumann; Bartoks fiery "Rhapsody," inspired by Gypsy and Hungarian folk music; and the sweepingly romantic Cello Sonata that gave the 16-year-old Strauss his first great public success. Featured on the program are "Three Nocturnes" written for the duo by Vermont composer Jorge Martin, whose "Romance for Orchestra" received a standing ovation in Randolph when played by the VSO on its 1999 "made in Vermont" tour. Davydov and Fanning have been acclaimed in the U.S. and abroad for their brilliant virtuosity, musical insight and outstanding rapport as a duo. On one of their earlier tours of Europe they recorded extensively for Radio Netherlands. The duo was presented in a Carnegie Recital Hall debut after winning the prestigious Concert Artists Guild International Competition in New York City. Radio audiences have heard them on the "Morning Pro Musica" Live Performers Series over WGBH-FM, on the Artists Series on WNYC, New York, and in live and recorded concerts on Vermont Public Radio.

From 2 to 4 p.m. at the Christ Church Parish Hall, audience members will have the opportunity to bring one of their favorite recordings (cassette, LP or CD) to this gathering. Selections from these recordings provided by the audience will be listened to by everybody and then commented on by an expert panel of local music personalities. Last year, an audience more than 50 people brought a diverse set of their favorite jazz recordings, from 1920s jazz vocalist Laverne Baker to classics by Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Eric Dolphy and Bud Powell, cool jazz for brass from the 1970s and more. The audiences positive reaction to this novel event has led its sponsor, the Green Mountain Jazz Series, to make it an annual mid-winter event on Groundhog Day. This years panel, moderated by Vermont Public Radio jazz host George Thomas, includes guitarist David Kraus, bassist Ellen Powell, guitarist and mandolinist Dan Haley, and Vermont Jazz Ensemble conductor and jazz educator Rich Davidian. Immediately after the panel discussion, there will be an open jazz jam session with live music, 4 to 7 p.m.
