My sound is a clear, silvery high soprano with strength and agility. I come from a musical family, and am proud to have sung vocals on my twin brother's recently released rock album. I studied Classics at Clare College, Cambridge, where I was Senior Choral Scholar. I trained with Teresa Cahill and took postgraduate diplomas at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1995 and at Trinity College of Music, London in 1996. I now study with Marie Hayward Segal, and my coach is Mary Hill. I won the Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Competition (1996) and was a finalist in the Great Elm Vocal competition (1996). I was appointed to the staff of the BBC Singers in 1996 (just in time to sing at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales!) and appear regularly as soloist with the group, including with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis in the Festival Hall, London and with Ensemble Moderne under Pierre Boulez in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. I have a busy diary of oratorio engagements in the UK. Recent highlights include Tippett's

In October 2001 she sang the role of Tiny in Britten's opera Paul Bunyan at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, in a concert performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Barry Wordsworth. They are not often heard today, which is a pity for the breadth and freedom of Bach's musical thought is inspirational, as is the sheer delight of the virtuosic, improvisatory character of these beautiful pieces. They are entertaining without being superficial, and free without being pointless and shambolic; in the Toccatas, Bach allows his imagination to roam free while at the same time his intellect retains full structural control: there is no hint, at least to my ears, of any disunity. In a recent television interview, Alfred Brendel has defined the masterpiece as a piece "which combines the incombineable", and while I have one or two reservations about that idea, I can certainly see what he means, and by that definition the Toccatas are indeed masterpieces in their own right. Performing them presents many problems. The juxtaposition of ideas sometimes diametrically opposed within a single piece requires very sharp musical reflexes, and the emotional range of the pieces is enormous. They strike the listener as being composed of a series of musical sections, or movements, which oscillate between free passages - often pathetic - and stricter contrapuntal or fugal sections, contrasts which require careful handling.

Dramatic and moving, they have been described as a celebration of, and insight into, the composer's spirit, capturing a maelstrom of elation and stillness. The CD sleeve includes an illuminating essay by John Butt, one of the world's leading academic authorities on Bach. Katharine Durran enjoys a divergent career in both the intellectually and technically complex world of new music pianism and the sensitive and intimate sphere of the song recital accompanist. Her performance of Bach brings elements of both and makes for an interpretation of energy and grace. A CD of compelling listening which is not to be missed. Daniel Stearns, Piano

A little essay, issued at the recital - given yesterday by mezzo soprano Jane Irwin with pianist Katharine Durran - pointed to the fact that the poems of Friedrich Ruckert would largely have been overwhelmed by his more illustrious nineteenth-century contemporaries Goethe, Eichendorf, and Heine, but for one thing: a raft of the century's greatest composers - including Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Mahler - elected to lavish upon Ruckert's verse some of their most inspired melodies. Drawing together a lieder recital comprised of these composers' settings of some of Ruckert's texts thus produced an intelligent - if slightly unvaried - programme. And, basically, Jane Irwin's creamy mezzo voice was well-suited to the music. The plus factors in her performance were her expressions of ardour and, especially at the two climactic points of Schubert's Du Bist die Ruh , her steady generation of tonal intensity.

Looked at number symbolism as applied to the work, and found some interesting structural details reinforced by Fibonacci number sequences. Beginning to tidy up the text, making sure that it fits together. Writing this sort of analytical essay is a little like composing music: things have to fit together as a consequence of something else. In other words there has to formal logic to the overall design. I feel like KC are the dinosaurs and I am the one digging their bones. Maybe I was an archaeologist in another life? The transcription of Robert's solo begins when I've finished this and had a cup of coffee to propel me into action. Drove to hospital last evening to see my father. We called in on my mother first, picked up my dad's clean washing and then drove on. When we arrived he was asleep and were advised not to disturb him. The nurse tells us his health is improving. My mother also feels more rested. Answered Jacob's questions re Black Sun, and received a phone call from Stuart King, artistic director of Chroma who have just recorded their first album. Stuart has asked for score/parts of my little piece 'Quaternaries'. They hope to perform the piece in June and again in 2002. This is good news. 'Quaternaries' was only the second piece that I considered to be a 'piece', written in 1990. Stuart has also asked to see 'Deadfall'. Ian McDonald also e-mailed with details of the tambourine in 'If I Was' from Drivers Eyes. Apparently, it is the same instrument played by George Harrison on 'We Can Work It Out' (I think it's 'We Can Work It Out'). I will listen to 'If I Was' with different ears from now on...

Extractions: I write this to the accompaniment of Tallis' 'If ye Love Me', closely followed by Farrant's 'Hide not thou thy face'. I've no doubt that the Vicar if, by chance he is affiliated to one of the larger southern cathedrals - perhaps as a Prebendary - has the chance of hearing first-class choirs sing these works. It may be that these shorter anthems are perfectly within the scope of his own church choir. It's doubtful that a smaller parish church choir could tackle Gibbons' 'O clap your hands' which is playing now. To sing these pieces as part of a really good choir remains in my memory like it were yesterday. I have decided to remain away from inferior chocolate. Peter Sinfield sent a concerned E-mail saying that it is a cause of migraine. So, I have taken to calling in at our local health-food shop and getting 'Hikers Mix' which has all sorts of natural things included. As a result the migrains do seem to have lessened. But I sinned yesterday: ate a Time Out bar yesterday (the temptation...the temptation...) and woke up this morning with a headache which has now passed. William Byrd's 'Bow thine ear' has just begun, flooded with lots of false-relations. Perhaps this music is here to remind me that an act of contrition is required for so serious a misdemeanour. In my case 'the wages of sin is...migrains caused by Time Out bars'. 2 07/30/2001 The other day I came across some papers that hadn't moved since 1989. I'd written things - plans for pieces, really - which had been forgotten about. During summer hols I usually try and study something. In 1989 I became very interested in T.S. Eliot's work. This is not remarkable in itself, but very remarkable in the way it connects with my current thinking. It may be something that The Vicar will be able to comment on more successfully than I? He/she could use it for Sunday sermon material, maybe? Anyway, this is what I wrote, which I owe to unidentified sources, except those found in Eliot's work and a paper I have by Genevieve W. Foster:
