The concert will include Robert Schumann's Variations on the Name Abegg,Op. 1; Stephen Paulus' Preludes for Piano, 1, 3 and 4; Maurice Ravel's LaValse; Franz Liszt/Tchaikovsky's Polonaise from Eugene Onegin; and Sergei Prokofiev's Sonata No. 8 in B-flat Major, Op. 84. Titled "Raising an American Voice," Downes' program will be presented against a backdrop of contemporary documentary photography. With a focus of "true American" concert music of the 1920s and 1930s, the program will feature the music of Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, George Gershwin and other composers who drew from the folk and jazz vernacular to create a new and unique musical language. Cited by critics for her "breathtaking virtuosity" and "penetrating, sensitive accounts of classical and romantic repertoire," Downes is recognized as one of the most exciting young pianists today. Downes has performed throughout Europe and the United States, including the Vienna Konzerthaus as a soloist with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra as well as the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.
