Knopf, 1999), illustrated with photographs and maps, 475pp, $31.50 (hardcover). GS#6152 Ordering Information T he First World War created the modern world. A conflict of unprecedented ferocity, it abruptly ended the relative peace and prosperity of the Victorian era, unleashing such demons of the twentieth century as mechanized warfare and mass death. It also helped to usher in the ideas that have shaped our times-modernism in the arts, new approaches to psychology and medicine, radical thoughts about economics and society-and in so doing shattered the faith in rationalism and liberalism that had prevailed in Europe since the Enlightenment. With The First World War The Age of Revolution: , by Eric Hobsbawm, (Random House, Inc., 1996), A Vintage Book, first published in 1962, 356pp, $13.50 (paperback). No one has documented the dual impact of the Industrial and French Revolutions more thoroughly or insightfully than Eric Hobsbawm in this magisterial work, the commencing volume of his epic four-volume history of the making of the modern world. Extractions: At the beginning of 2001, the news of the moment was the "Mad Cow" epidemic. Luckily, this worrying phenomenon touched our Region only marginally and notwithstanding thousands of inspections, only one case of infection was verified. Unfortunately, however, our Island featured prominently in the outbreak of another infection. Although harmless to human beings, it affected the sheep farms very badly. Tens of thousands of heads of sheep were slaughtered because of the so-called "Blue Tongue Syndrome" and the entire breeding sector was brought to its knees. The vaccination of the animals, which could have at least reduced the damage, will only just be carried out with much delay during 2002. From a meteorological point of view, Winter and Spring were rather wet. The Island's 40 water basins gathered some rather positive statistics if compared with those recorded during certain drought-ridden years in the past. The real drawback, if these statistics are compared to seasonal averages, was the Autumn period or rather what should have been Autumn and instead ended up being a continuation of Summer. Never in living memory have an October and November been so hot as in 2001, evidently a sign that seasonal patterns are really changing.
