Garry Dial -- Biography combined his talents as producer, composer and pianist with james Morrison and Uponhis return, Dial's partnership with saxophonist dick Oatts offered http://www.roches.com/garrydial/bio.html
Extractions: Garry Dial has firmly established himself as one of the most prodigious and respected talents in jazz today, always broadening his artistic horizons as a pianist, composer, produer and teacher. Initially, Dial's talent as a pianist earned him a coveted and unique place in jazz history. Ruth Ellington, sister of the great Duke Ellington, enlisted him to perform and record for the Ellington family's personal library the entire Duke Ellington catalog. Many of these compositions would have been lost as they were unperformed and unrecorded. In the late 1970's Dial spent 10 years with the Red Rodney-Ira Sullivan Quintet, winning widespread acclaim as the primary composer and arranger for these legendary talents. The album "Red Rodney, Live at the Village Vanguard" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz group in 1980. "Ira Does It All" (1981), featuring Ira Sullivan, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Instrumentalist. "Sprint" was chosen as one of the 10 best productions for 1983 by the News & Observer, North Carolina. Rounding out these 10 years Dial's artistic visions are found on all of the releases of the Quintet. In 1987 Garry Dial's debut release "Never Is now" (Continuum Records), performed in a trio format, featuring Joey Baron and Jay Anderson "...showcases his exceptional compositional chops on 12 originals. Dial displays an effortless supreme melodocism on tunes both coherent and open-ended enough to allow for significant participation from his associates." (New Music Report)

Tommy formed his first orchestra in 1938. His orchestras though loud and very enthusiastic never garnered great public acclaim. Some of the band members in 1938 and part of '39 were, Tino Isgro, tenor saxophone, Whitey Thomas, trumpet, Tony Picciotto, trumpet, Benny West, and Bobby Boon. Tino Isgro went on to play with Johnny Long (and can be seen in the film 'Hit The Ice'), also with Glen Gray, Teddy Powell, Dick Rogers, and in 1945, with Jimmy Dorsey. (Many more after Dorsey.) At the start of 1939, Whitey Thomas went with Isham Jones. He later joined the Glenn Miller Air Force Band. Whitey now (1998) lives in Mossy Rock, Washington.

Extractions: DAN LEVINSON'S ROOF GARDEN JASS BAND The Roof Garden Jass Band was organized in 1987 by Dan Levinson, at that time a senior at New York University and an aspiring jazz clarinetist. With only weeks left before graduation, Dan was all dressed up with no place to go. Noting that 1987 marked the 70th anniversary of the first jazz record he decided to go back to 1917 in his aural time machine. With the help and moral support of James "Rosy" McHargue and historian H. O. Brunn, Dan went to work studying and transcribing the music of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, a group of five musicians from New Orleans who took the world by storm when they made the first jazz recording in history, on February 26, 1917. On July 1, 1987, Dan presented an historic concert in New York City celebrating the 70th anniversary of recorded jazz. The event was sold out and instantly reestablished the Original Dixieland Jazz Band as the first pervader of jazz music, and established the Roof Garden Jass Band as the ODJB's posthumous voice. Since then, the RGJB has performed on numerous occasions for standing room only audiences in the New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia areas, and continues to make appearances today. Early recordings, for example, captured James P. Johnson playing with Clarence Williams, and Thomas Fats Waller with Bennie Payne. Hank Jones has recorded with Tommy Flanagan and with John Lewis; Chick Corea with Herbie Hancock; Dr. Billy Taylor with Ramsey Lewis, and so on. No one has been a more loyal promoter of piano parties and duets, or had more fun with them, than Dick Hyman. Hyman is a true renaissance man of music, a pianist, organist, composer, arranger, conductor, and producer, with two Emmys to his credit. Since the early 80s, he has produced an annual concert series in New York City, Jazz in July, in which piano parties and duets have been a constant ingredient. Arbors Records held its first March of Jazz festival/party in 1994, in honor of Bob Haggart on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Hyman was not only in attendance; he was responsible for mixing and matching pianists and repertory for what subsequently became this CD, a labor of love if there ever was one. Joining Hyman at the festival were Derek Smith and Ralph Sutton. (Unfortunately, three musicians on this CDSutton, Haggart, and Milt Hintonhave died since the event.)

Extractions: The school year of 1957-58, doing graduate work at Stanford, I was happy to be offered a place in trumpeter Robin Hodes' new band in San Francisco. On piano would be Don Ewell, on clarinet Bob Helm; Bill Dart would play drums, and, from the Kid Ory band, Charles Odin on string bass. After warm-up gigs in a couple of small clubs, Robin hustled us a stand at Peggy Tolk-Watkins Tin Angel on the Embarcadero, where I had often gone to hear bands led by Turk or Kid Ory: six nights a week, 9 to 2, union scale. For me this was the big time, for sure, with none of the grief of being leader. Hodes favored black suits, so that was our uniform: ties and jackets at all times. My only black suit would have served me well above the Arctic Circle. I began coming home from the gig three or four pounds lighter than at supper time, and had to start having the suit rush-cleaned every second or third day. Never mind, I was living the life, even if it left me comatose in morning classes. As an undergraduate I had learned to look wide-awake while brain-dead.

Extractions: DICK HYMAN Throughout a busy musical career that got underway in the early '50s, Dick Hyman has functioned as pianist, organist, arranger, conductor, and composer. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in well over 100 albums recorded under his own name and many more in support of other artists. While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Mr. Hyman has also investigated ragtime and the earliest periods of jazz and has researched and recorded the piano music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Zez Confrey, Eubie Blake, and Fats Waller which he often features in his frequent recitals. Other solo recordings include the music of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. Recent recordings with orchestra are From The Age Of Swing, Swing Is Here, and Cheek To Cheek, while his early explorations on the Moog synthesizer have now been reissued. Extractions: CLICK FOR ARCHIVE Considering Condi If Internet columnists and 'bloggers' choose the Republican candidate for vice-president, it will be Condoleeza Rice by a landslide in 2004. She's surpassed the star power of such Bush administration luminaries as Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell, exceeded only by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the president himself. Rice is the first black woman to serve as national security advisor and her performance has been stellar. Based on her background, this achievement is unsurprising. She grew up in Birmingham under the regime of segregation. One of her childhood friends was killed in the 1963 church bombing that was one of the events that turned the tide against Jim Crow and in favor of the civil rights movement. This did not stop her from entering the University of Denver at the age of 15. Initially intending to be a concert pianist, Rice was eventually drawn to foreign policy, with a concentration in Soviet affairs. She was offered a professorship at Stanford before she even completed her PhD. and by the time she was 35, the first President Bush was telling Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev that Rice told him everything he knew about the USSR. This combination of inspiring biography, personal achievement and conservative realism in her foreign policy views makes Rice an attractive candidate to Republicans who wish to forge a more inclusive party without abandoning principle. Yet on one question, conservatives are questioning whether a Bush-Rice ticket would abandon a crucial principle.
