Extractions: 2 John Bell Young ON WATCH The hall is revealing in a way the broadcasts are not. For one thing, it is possible to hear how each competitor really sounds as opposed to how he makes music. So, as it turns out, the young Russian Primakov has a tiny sound one that barely projects beyond the footlights. His colleague, Koltakov sports a watery tone, which only enhances his flashy and relatively insubstantial playing that overstayed its welcome after five minutes. His glib reading of the Liszt sonata was grotesquely cavalier, turning it as he did into the kind of cocktail music you might hear in a cruise ship lounge. For this pianist rushing and slowing down in the cantabile sections while drawing attention to the downbeats over the barlines is a measure of profound expression. It was a distasteful performance, though the audience went wild after his even more vulgar reading of Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody in the Horowitz paraphrase. Diabelli or every affective nuance in a Bach suite, any judgement he renders beyond the merely obvious or superficial is already suspect. Extractions: The appeal of William Shakespeare's plays transcends every consideration of time and place. The poignant story of the star-crossed lovers of old Verona, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, offspring of two families whose blood feud dooms the couple's love to a tragic end, has cast a powerful spell of inspiration on scores of composers, from many lands and across four centuries. Tchaikovsky's fantasy overture remains the most popular evocation. It was one his three Shakespearean settings, the others being an orchestral fantasy inspired by The Tempest (1873), and an overture to Hamlet (1888, followed by a full incidental score in 1891).

Ms. Chu, whose appointment is effective February 4, will be responsible for coordinating the growth of the financial base for the Cliburn and its various programs. Hertell and Mrs. Marie Hertell offered a piano recital in the residence of the diplomatic mission featuring famous United States pianist Jon Nakamatsu, winner of the Gold Medal in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, who played a repertoir which included melodies of the great classics. Aside from the recital in the Ambassadors residence, Jon Nakamatsu will participate as guest soloist with the National Symphony next March 20. Ambassador Hertell and his wife welcomed more than one hundred guests in their residence, who enjoyed the music of Frédéric Chopin, Claude Debussy and Sergei Rachmaninoff. In his remarks before the recital, Ambassador Hertell congratulated the members of the Dominican private sector present for their support of culture and education, including the Embassy´s programs of English teaching and Fulbright scholarships. I know that those present tonight have supported cultural and educational programs for the Dominican Republic. And as we have found in our country, cultural and educational initiatives work best when both the private and public sector come together to support these endeavors.

Extractions: There have been parties, a dinner with Van Cliburn and concerts, of course, during Olga Kern's two months here. The gold medalist of the 11th annual Van Cliburn International Piano Competition leaves Texas today, so this past week she was trying to pack in all the sights she could. Wednesday's agenda included her Fort Worth hostess, Suzy Jacobs, ushering the world-class pianist through some of the condos at Texas Motor Speedway. A meeting of the cultures, so to speak. The ever-smiling pianist got to see Plano racer Greg Ray's high-rise condo filled with racing memorabilia before making her way to the condo owned by Don Carter, former owner of the Dallas Mavericks. His condo includes a car-inspired German-built Schimmel piano with the body and red paint fashioned by Ferrari. "It's so great!" said the wide-eyed pianist, sticking her head under the lid of the piano, which resembled the hood of a car.

She comes from Moscow, where she began her studies at the School for Gifted Children. She went on to study at the Paris Conservatory and the Moscow Conservatory, and in 1994 she entered and won the Maria Callas Competition in Greece, the homeland of her great grandfather, whereupon the Greek Consulate in Moscow gave her Greek citizenship.

Extractions: The Courier-Journal Co-gold-medalist Olga Kern will perform at U of L on March 22. The classical-music world is awash with contests, but in the United States none has the cachet of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held every four years since 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas. Beginning Tuesday night at 8, four of the most recent Van Cliburn prize-winners will play solo recitals at the University of Louisville School of Music. First up is Antonio Pompa-Baldi, one of two artists to share the silver medal this past June. On March 22, co-gold-medalist Olga Kern will perform. Next season the remaining two pianists are slated to appear. This is a major coup for the music school, underwritten by the namesake of the Margaret Comstock Concert Hall, where all four recitals will take place. If there's one guaranteed component of the Van Cliburn, it's excitement. You don't win a top prize without demonstrating enormous keyboard verve and stamina. Pompa-Baldi who grew up in Italy and now teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio has several tremendous works on Tuesday's program, including Chopin's Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor and Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2 (also in B-flat Minor). But he's opening with music from the Classical, not Romantic, era: Mozart's Sonata in F Major, K. 332.
Bronson Piano Studio van cliburn became a musical and cold war icon as an American pianist whovanquished his European and Russian peers in a world class competition. http://www.bronsonpianostudio.com/reviews/111698r1.htm
Extractions: Lyn Bronson Well, she didn't wear a red, white and blue cape, and she didn't spin around three times, but she did just about everything else. Kate Tamarkin, the second guest conductor this season being considered for the post of conductor and music director of the Monterey Symphony, charmed us with her personality and wowed us with the superb results she achieved with our orchestra. Just as significant was the fact that she earned the respect and support of the orchestra members themselves. Sometimes we see string players politely tapping their bows against their instruments as a form of applause, but this is the first time I can remember hearing our orchestra members wildly stamping their feet at the end of the concert. The occasion at Sunset Center in Carmel on Monday, November 16, was the second concert of the Monterey Symphony's 1998-99 concert season. And this is vitally important season, since seven guest conductors have been selected to audition with the orchestra, and one will become the orchestra's future music director and conductor.
