The Collection includes only grand pianos, by important makers whose instruments were highly regarded in their day, acquired in basically good condition, with most of their original materials intact (especially soundboards). It aims to match each instrument to a specific composer or generation of composers known to have used or preferred that make and vintage of piano. The period of pianos in the Collection extends from about 1790 to 1907, representing music from Haydn and Beethoven through the French Impressionists. Extractions: "The Road Not Taken" in Classical Teaching Literature by John Funk "Whoever studies music, let his daily bread be Haydn. Beethoven indeed is admirable, he is incomparable, but he has not the same usefulness as Haydn: he is not a necessity...Haydn the great musician, the first who created everything, discovered everything, taught everything to the rest!" This was quoted by the great painter and cultural icon of 19th century France, Jean Ingres (1780-1867). Today, composers are frequently evaluated by their great artistic presence, with regard to their influence and earth shattering stamina. In the time of Haydn, however, the artist was largely a faithful and diligent servant, a craftsman of apprenticeship, practice, and often ill-fortune. From the streets of Vienna, Haydn, a teenager and nearly starving, undertook an arduous course of self instruction through the study of musical works, notably those of C. P. E. Bach, of whom he later said, "Bach is the father, we the children." Bachs monumental Essay On the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments (1753-1762) was a major pedagogical resource for keyboardists and composers alike, a treatise that Mozart studied religiously, and Beethovens first reading assignment to Czerny.

Director Tomas de Julian could not believe his ears. On the other end of the line was Clarence Seedorf, the Dutch star of the Real Madrid soccer team (now with Inter Milano). The businessman was even more amazed when the caller expressed an interest in a white "Rokoko" piano with gilded decorations. The energetic Julian recalls: "That model was not very tasteful. We had it on loan from the manufacturer, Továrna na piana (Piano Factory) of Hradec Králové, as an advertising decoration that might attract customers, and we were supposed to return it after two years." The soccer player was building a house and was enchanted by the unusual next to the State Opera instrument. They came to an agreement and the firm collected a million pesetasas a deposit. When the news broke of the dark-complexioned Dutchman's transfer to the Italian league, Julian assumed his interest in the piano would fall by the wayside. But not long afterward he was able to call to Prague: "You can issue the invoice. Seedorf kept his word." Since that time the director has had free tickets to all Real games. And most importantly, the sports idol gave him invaluable free advertisement. The tabloid press had a field day with Seedorf's piano and Julian's name was always mentioned.

First she taught in the conducting class next to Hans Swarowsky, and in 1959 she received the title of professor, and from 1970 on she taught concert performing. This position she held until 1980 when she officially became a pensioner. However she continued to work for another 2 years but had to stop when she had a stroke which paralyzed her at one side which made it impossible to continue teaching and performing.

Adalberto Riva tapped a wide spectrum of styles during this quite revealing recital. He began with two contrasting and brief works by Domenico Scarlatti. Tranquillity and delicacy of touch marked the Sonata in F sharp minor K. 25 , offset by the sheer brightness and well articulated Sonata in G major K. 201 Strangely enough this did not elicit much reponse from the audience; one perhaps is more taken to externally more showy pieces. Some, not all, because there was much to appeal to the mind and senses later on. In the meantime, a delightful piece, never performed locally to my knowledge, was Rossini's very evocative Un petit train de plaisir. One of his very mature "sins of his old age". Full of wit, humor and description, what at one point seemed to sound like the dropping of a few notes and a certain lack of rhythmic cohesion was only evocative of a temporary derailing of the chugging machine ! Equally novel were the two Petrassi Invenzioni ns. 1 and 2

After studying with Mozart for two years, Hummel toured widely as an outstanding child prodigy. Upon returning to Vienna in 1793, Hummel continued his studies of counterpoint, composition, and organ with Haydn, Salieri and Albrechtsberger. In 1804 Hummel became Konzertmeister to Prince Esterházy, composing for the chapel, teaching, and assembling the Haydn archives. He was Kapellmeister in Stuttgart from 1816 to 1818 and later moved to the same post in Weimar Here he conducted the court theatre while making major trips to France, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, and London. He was a prolific composer producing 127 compositions with opus numbers, nine posthumous works, and 39 works without opus numbers-most of them unpublished. He composed in all genres, including operas and incidental music, ballets, sacred and secular vocal music, orchestralovertures and dances. However, it is his many works for solo piano, piano duets and most of all his piano concertos that really illuminate Hummels importance as a composer.

Extractions: May/June's Composer of the Month John Field John Field is usually remembered as the Irish Composer who wrote the first nocturne for piano. (Chopin later made this music form very popular, building on Fields early nocturnes.) John Field was also a famous pianist who gave concerts all over Europe. John Field was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1782. His father was a violinist in a theater, and his grandfather was an organist. Fields grandfather gave him early lessons on the piano. When Field was nine years old, he studied with Tommaso Giordani, an Italian composer living in Ireland, who immediately saw his talent and arranged for him to play at a number of concerts around Dublin. The Field family later moved to London where John met composer, pianist, and piano maker, Muzio Clementi. Field was apprenticed to Clementi and went to work and learn from him. For seven years he did not perform at public concerts. Instead he performed on pianos at Clementis shop to help convince people to buy them. (The piano was still a relatively new instrument at this time.) In July 1802 Clementi and Field traveled to many European cities to promote Clementis pianos. On this trip, Field performed frequently and became better known as a pianist. Audiences were impressed by his performances of J.S. Bachs fugues.

Extractions: B I O G R A P H Y Born in Lisbon on the 28th December 1775, the son of an Italian musician, João Domingos Bomtempo followed in the footsteps of his father, eventually replacing him as first oboe in the Royal Chamber of D. José I. Having studied at the Patriarchal Seminary, at 14, he was admitted into the brotherhood of Saint Cecilia as songster of the Royal Chapel of Bemposta. In 1801 he chose not to follow the custom of Portuguese musicians, and put to one side the continuation of his studies in Italy, and traveled instead to France. This decision compromised his career in the operatic world. In Paris he was welcomed into a group of émigrés who shared his liberal views. Here he launched a career as a piano virtuoso along the lines of a Clementi, Cramer or Dussek (music that was much appreciated by Chopin). During the same period he himself premiered some of his first compositions. The initial works of Domingos Bomtempo, influenced by Clementi were well received in Paris and were promptly published by the Leduc and Pleyel publishing houses. In 1804 he rose to considerable fame, appearing, amongst other venues, in the Salle Olympique as pianist and composer. In May of 1809 the paper "Le publiciste" published the following critique of one of his concerts: His way of playing the piano won over all with his agility and the energy with which he played, with the nobility and grandeur of style that so rarely come together at the same level. Never have such light and firm fingers played over a keyboard, never has so much expression been given to an adagio on an instrument that seemed less than ideal. Bomtempo also deserves praise as a composer. (Paulo Ferreira de Castro, Sel., 1991: 130)

Extractions: As a follow-up to his highly acclaimed debut CD last year of Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier Book II, 11-year-old pianist Albert Wong has chosen to record five of Muzio Clementi's greatest piano sonatas (the Sonata in B minor Op. 40, No. 2; Sonata D Major Op. 40, No. 3; Sonata C Major Op. 37, No. 1; Sonata B-flat Major Op. 24, No. 2 and Sonata A Major Op. 33, No. 1). The performances by this extremely talented piano prodigy are both elegant and sensitive, revealing the amazing capabilities of this young performer. "The Clementi sonatas challenge the performer to respond to a wide range of dramatic characteristics. Wong does a reasonably good job in meeting this challenge. He brings a sense of dignity to the more solemn moments, and captures much of the humor and playfulness that percolate throughout these scores. If Wong misses the more sophisticated corners of this wit, as well as the last degree of gravity in the darker sections, he may be forgiven. Albert Wong was 11 years old when he made this recording.
