Extractions: N O composer had a more fortunate life-span than Muzio Clementi. He was born in Rome in 1752, two years after Bach's death, while Handel was still an active figure on the musical scene of London, where Clementi would spend much of his life; he died in 1832, a year before the birth of Brahms , just as Berlioz, Chopin Schumann , and Mendelssohn were getting their careers under way. In 1781 Clementi engaged in a piano competition with Mozart in Vienna, for the benefit of Emperor Joseph II; during the 1790s he shared the stage of London's Hanover Square Concert Rooms with the visiting Haydn ; in 1807, once again in Vienna, he carried on elaborate negotiations with Beethoven that resulted in his becoming the composer's principal English publisher; and on June 21, 1824, he attended the London debut of Franz Liszt . During most of his life he was more famous than Mozart, his reputation exceeded only by those of Haydn and Beethoven both of whom he not only was influenced by but also influenced. In addition, Clementi was one of the premier keyboard virtuosos and teachers of his day, and he ran a highly successful publishing firm that also manufactured pianos. At his death he was buried with high ceremony in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey. Yet today Clementi's name is scarcely known. His monumental

Extractions: "My enthusiasm for playing the piano and my curiosity, how the great masterpieces of the 19th century might have been realized on the original instruments, were the motives for my engagement in antique pianos and at least the foundation of the Klavieratelier. I played piano since my childhood; so I began to study seriously after school at the Hochschule, now University of Music in Vienna. With the Gamerith-Consort I toured one and a half year through various European countries. To play chambermusic of Haydn and Mozart an an original Walter-grand from about 1800 was absolutely influencing and "correcting" my playing and my fingertechnique - I had to change from the modern piano to a very early type of the fortepiano.

You'll see how the pianos have changed in design over the years, and some very interesting examples of both old and modern design pianos. The piano was invented in the late 1690s-early 1700s in Italy by Cristafori. Here is an example of Cristofori's instruments, this one built in 1722. Purchased from Manfred, Count von Schönborn, whose signed affidavit states that the piano had been part of the entailed estate of his wife's family, the Esterhazys at their palace at Eisenstadt, the Katholnig was almost certainly played by the composer and pianist Johann Nepomuk Hummel (who as a child prodigy had been a pupil of Mozart and of Clementi.) Hummel was Haydn's successor to the position of Kapellmeister to the Esterhazys, serving in that capacity from 1804-1811.

Extractions: Pianos The virtuoso pianist in London Musical style and fashion changed dramatically during the second half of the 18th century. Drama and expression became as important as melody and harmony and the piano was the inspiration and the ideal vehicle for the new music which developed as the 19th century progressed. The piano was the only instrument which combined the resources for playing all the elements of a romantic composition. Melody, harmony, rhythm, varied attack, dramatic contrasts of loud and soft as well as controlled crescendo and diminuendo were all available to the solo pianist. Dussek (1760-1812), described by Haydn as "one of the most upright, moral, and, in music, most eminent of men", established himself as a pianist composer in London 1789. Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) settled in England in his teens later becoming a fashionable teacher, composer and performer. His pupils included J B Cramer, one of the first teachers at the Royal Academy of Music, and John Field, the inventor of the nocturne. Clementi took part in the famous musical duel with Mozart, he was Beethoven's publisher in England and he attended Liszt's London debut in 1824. Exhibit:

Answer: Thinking about teaching repertoire of Chopin we must firstly remember the time he lived and taught in - there were not as many possibilities in any field of people's activity as today... - therefore the amplitude of studies using by him could not been as large as it commonly happen today. Chopin's mostly used piano technical compendiums were " Preludes and Exercises " and " Gradus ad Parnassum " by Muzio Clementi, concurrently he liked the Studies of Ignaz Moscheles, of J. Cramer and brilliant virtuoso works of Johann N. Hummel. Only his truly greatly talented students (for example - Jane Stirling) have played his own Studies op. 10 and op. 25. But his most appreciated collection of the musical pieces that, in his opinion, truly can improve the piano technique - were the both parts of " Das Wohltemperierte Klavier ". It is worth interest - let you consider the technical complicity level of many Preludes there! Actually - " Gradus ad Parnassum " by Clementi, the

His most famous works include the Brandenburg Concerti, the Well-tempered clavier, the art of Fugue, his Mass in B-minor, Air on the G-String, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, and the St. Matthew Passion. Those of us who admire Bach and his work find in it perfect unity and balance of emotional subtlety with an awesome, unrivalled depth of technical means and architecture. While Bach's work can and should be admired for its unmatched beauty and emotional power alone, careful study reveals a use of complex, formal, technical means and structures from which Bach brings forth that height of human feelings in a way that reveals the workings of one of the supreme intellects of all time.
