Steinberg's succession to the helm of the Pittsburgh Symphony, after Fritz Reiner had honed it to a finely-tuned ensemble, brought a luster and brilliantly polished patina to the orchestral sheen; one could easily hear Stokowski's or Ormandy's Philadelphia sound in the Capitol and Command Classics LP's of Steinberg's most fertile period of recording, 1952-62. When Steinberg went on to Boston, he brought his superb leadership skills to an ensemble quite enamored of him, and his Schubert 9th is still to be sought for its opulent romanticism. - GL Serge Koussevitzky conducts Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich

Extractions: Ferruccio Benvenuto Busoni Italian pianist and composer. F erruccio Benvenuto Michelangiolo Dante Busoni was born in Empoli near Florence in Italy on April 1, 1866. He died in Berlin on July 27 1924. He was an Italian composer, pianist and conductor. His father was a talented Italian clarinetist and his mother was the German piano virtuoso Anna Weiss. Therefore, Ferruccio came to represent a remarkable synthesis of the two differing attitudes to music. Busoni was a child prodigy, and at the age of seven, he already played for an audience. In 1874, at the age of eight, he gave a concert in Trieste, many other appearances followed. I n 1875, his father Ferdinando decided to move to Vienna to allow his son to study in the prestigious Conservatory in that city. This experience, rather disappointing from a didactic point of view, was nonetheless fundamental for his discovery of new musical worlds and convinced the family to settle in Graz, where Busoni, from 1878 to 1881, took lessons of harmony, counterpoint and composition from the famous maestros W. A. Remy and Willem Mayer and came close with Rubinstein and Brahms. I n 1884 at the age of eighteen, he began composing and wrote his cantata 'Il Sabato del Villagio' after

Extractions: Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) was one of the great virtuoso pianists of the 20th century. He was also a daring conductor of new music, a revered teacher, scholar and a composer. Busoni had a great influence upon Schoenberg in the years before the First World War and counted among his composition students Paul Hindemith, Phillip Jarnach and Kurt Weill. Until about 1910 Busoni composed in a rich, neo-Brahmsian style. He became dissatisfied, as did many others of his day, with the limitations of tonality and conventional musical language. A decade or so of intense experimentation ensued in the search for a new musical idiom. The series of sonatinas for piano represent fully worked out experiments in widely divergent aspects of this coalescing musical language, whilst Busoni's masterpiece the opera Doktor Faust , is its splendidly integrated expression. Busoni's philosophy was always pluralistic; it is unlikely that he would have approved of Schoenberg's later codification of style. Doktor Faust , not quite finished at Busoni's death, had a profound impact upon many composers (most notably Alban Berg). It has been performed with increasing frequency in recent years (in a version completed by Anthony Beaumont from Busoni's detailed notes), suggesting that Busoni's day as a composer may yet come

Extractions: Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) Ferruccio Dante Michelangiolo Benvenuto Busoni was born at Empoli onApril 1 1866 and died in Berlin on July 27 1924, aged fifty-eight. He won world fame as a virtuoso pianist, combining an amazingly easy agility with a quite extraordinary sense of 'colour', a perfection of phrasing, and a sense of proportion that unerringly put part in the proper relation to part and to the whole. He was, in the fullest sense, both pianist and musician. As a composer he wrote four operas, and numerous orchestral, chamber, and piano works. He also wrote a number of songs. In his later works he must be classed with the 'anti-romantics-; these, like his writings upon musical subjects, show him to have been a man of high intellectual interests and powers. Amongst his masterpieces are his Concerto for Piano, orchestra and male chorus; his Fantasia Contrapuntistica for solo piano, and his final incomplete opera Doktor Faustus. Always an artist in quest, Busoni saw it as teh goal of his creative life to find his 'own individual sound'. His ambivalent nature, striving to reconcile tradition with innovation, his gifts as a composer and the profundity of his theoretical writings make Busoni one of the most interesting and important figures in the history of twentieth century music.

On Busoni's transciptions for piano Left photo ] Busoni( Photo from Hyperion CDA 66566 Ferruccio Dante Michelangiolo Benvenuto Busoni(1866 was famous pianist and composer in his comtemporary. He published Bach's works by his transcription at Breitkopf und Härtel from 1888(at 22 years old) to 1920 for more than 30 years, which was task of his total life. He transcripted Bach's spirit to piano. If we judge him now, it's obvious that he reflected the romantic years when he had lived. But pianists have to watch how he traslated idioms of cembalo, organ, and even violin to piano. I think his translation of Chaconne(BWV.1004-5) and organ works have to be noticable. The former explicited Bach's various polyphonic lines, so Hugo Leichtentritt(famous musicologist and his first biographer) even said "It's easier to analyse this work with Busoni's transcription". And the latter used pedal very audaciously and delicately, which are indispensable to playing organ works by piano. Busoni said ; ...not believe in the legendary tradition, that Bach must be played without the pedal. While the pedal is sometimes necessary in Bach's piano works, it is absolutely essential in transcribed organ pieces... Consider, that the mixtures opened with the full organ contain the 5th and octave, or even the 3rd and 7th, of every tone struck. An approximate imitation of these tone-blendings can be obtained, on the piano, only by using the pedal.
