Extractions: Ferruccio Dante Michelangelo Benvenuto Busoni was born in Empoli, near Florence. on April 1, 1866. His father, Fernando was a clarinettist, his mother Anna Weiss -Busoni a talented pianist of German origin. The youth showed great talent for music and received instruction from his parents. His first public performance was in Treiste prior to his eighth birthday. He was giving solo piano recitals by age 10. No less a figure than Anton Rubinstein took notice of the child and followed Busoni's career over the ensuing years. By his first international concert in Vienna at age 10, Busoni was fluent in both Italian and German. Eduard Hanslick also took note of the ten year olds abilities, writing in the 'Neue freie Presse' of his naive pleasure in music and lack of indulgent attachments. At age 12 the family moved to Graz in Austria, where the twelve year old had his Stabat Mater performed. He undertook studies with Wilhelm Mayer, also known under the compositional nom de plume of A. Nach Absolvierung der Tournee, die im April endete, blieb Busoni noch einige Zeit mit der Familie in New York. Erst im Septembcr fuhr er mit Gerda und Raffaelo, dem jüngeren Sohn, heim wärts. Sie nahmen ein italienisches Schiff, landeten in Genua, reisten aber nicht nach Bologna, weil sich dort die Dinge ungünstig entwickelt hatten. An wichtigen Kompositionen entstanden in den ersten Kriegsjahren die Dritte Sonatine "ad usum infantis" und ein Teil der indianisch inspirierten Werke. Unter den literarischen Arbeiten ist ein Geleitwort für die Novellen E. T. A. Hoffmanns und eine Glosse: "Zur Frage musikalischer Eigenart". Auch der Pianist Busoni kam in dieser Frühjahrssaison 1916 bedeutsam zu Wort. Vier Klavierabende im Abstand von ein bis zwei Wochen waren jeweils Werken von Bach, Beethoven, Chopin und Liszt gewidmet. "Busoni liebte die Romantiker nicht", schreibt in einem Brief sein späterer Kompositionsschüler Robert Blum, der keines der Züricher Konzerte versäumte, "und trotzdem spielte er, so wie ich es empfand, überaus vollendet romantische Musik." Busoni nahm an den künstlerischen Ereignissen dieser Jahre als kritischer Beobachter teil. Er saß in dem neueröffneten Cabaret Voltaire, wo Richard Hülsenbeck, Tristan Tzara, Iwan Goll, Hugo Ball, Hans Arp, Emmy Hennings die ersten dadaistischen Texte lasen, fand aber an "dieser gestammelten Dichtung" keinen Gefallen. Er kreuzte geistig die Klingen mit Igor Strawinskij, den er damals noch nicht kannte und von dem ihm aus Morges am Genfersee berichtet wurde, er sei erstaunt, daß Busoni die deutschen Klassiker liebe. Er ließ Strawinskij bestellen, wenn er die deutschen Klassiker kennen würde, so würde er sie auch lieben.
