Extractions: A French composer and organist, Messiaen (1908-1992) was one of the most influential teachers of this century. He was organist at the Sainte Trinite cathedral, and his music is always highly colorful and rhythmically brilliant. His thematic material is drawn primarily from two sources: Christian themes; and birdsong. "I've imposed the truths of the Faith on the concert hall, but in a liturgical sense...to bring a kind of Office, and organized act of praise, into the concert hall." Among his most important works are Quartet for the End of Time , which is based on the Book of Revelations and was composed in a German prisoner of war camp. "The hunger made me dream of sound colors," and these sound colors found their expression in this remarkable work. Another work, composed two years later, is the Contemplations on the Child Jesus , which expands on the marvelous colors, rhythmic virtuosity and bridsongs found in the Quartet. This piano work, along with his Six Sketches of Birds (see score at right, click to enlarge), are piano masterpieces, the complete

Extractions: By Jonathan Lee Maroon-News Staff Two non-traditional concerts will be performed in the upcoming week, one featuring the music of another culture and the other showcasing avant-garde twentieth century compositions. Both concerts are free and will take place in the Chapel. At 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, the ensemble known as Music from China will perform a program of both traditional and contemporary Chinese music. The six-member group, well-renowned in its homeland, is presently working and living in New York City. Music from China will perform works using traditional Chinese instruments, including the daruan (moon guitar), gaohu (double-stringed fiddle), di (flute), pipa (lute-like plucked instrument), zheng (zither) and yangqin (hammered dulcimer). Most of their pieces for the Sunday's performance are programmatic, representing diverse subject matter including the depiction of a battle and falling flower petals. "I encourage people to go and get the feel [of the difference] between Chinese and Western music," an international Colgate student with first-hand experience of this type of music said. "Although they are similar ... it [Chinese music] gives a different touch and color to the sound, and a different approach to music in general." In addition to their formal recital, Music from China will present a lecture to Colgate's China courses on Monday, October 27 and will lead the Humanities Colloquium at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the Ho Lecture Room.

Extractions: Wednesday, October 1 The Ancient Mask Repertory Theatre will perform Aeschylus' Greek tragedy The Persians , translated by Seth G. Benardete, on Wednesday, October 1, at 8:00 p.m. in Phipps Auditorium. Tickets are $2 for students and $6 for adults. The Persians focuses on the agony of war and the tragedy of over-reaching ambition in a tale heightened by the power of masked, chorus-centered theatre. When Persian ruler Xerxes tried to conquer Greece in 480 B.C., he ruled the largest empire the western world had ever known. Defeated by the combined Greek forces in the battle at Salamis, and at Platea, Persia's expansion into Europe ended miserably. First performed in 472 B.C., it is the earliest of the surviving Greek tragedies and the only one based on a historical event. Ancient Mask Repertory Theatre provides a unique opportunity to learn ancient theatrical traditions such as Greek and Roman, Sanskrit, Commedia dell-Arte characters and technique, Medieval liturgical drama, Japanese Noh and Pre-Columbian American texts. The AMRT is an ensemble of performers, directors, composers and researchers committed to using theatre to build community, foster individual exploration, and celebrate the interplay of art and the human condition.

Supplementary materials accompanying each set include liner notes, recording data, and photographs. Publishing, for the most part, is handled by one of our sister companies, Munka Music or Home of the Blues Music , but, in any event, we will be glad to assist the lessee in securing the appropriate mechanical licenses for their territory. CATALOG DIVISIONS: Mimosa Records masters and recordings Formed in Memphis in 1973 to highlight the blues vocals and guitar work of Joe Willie Wilkins, the label existed for only a short time and produced a total of three 45 rpm records! Since that time, it has grown to collect and record a great variety of music and produce unusual sets of blues and jazz for other labels, all of it containing a high degree of integrity and historical importance, the primary criteria for producer Steve LaVere. An outgrowth of Memphis' Home Of The Blues record shop, the label began in 1960. During its short existence, and with the able assistance and musical guidance of trumpeter and bandleader Willie Mitchell, the label recorded a wide variety of local Memphis and established New Orleans talent. It filled the void left by Sun Records' concentration on rockin' country music prior to Stax' arrival on the scene and the subsequent world-wide popularity of "soul" music. Produced into cohesive sets by Marc Ryan, the recordings are also available in a history-laden four CD boxed set.

Lionel Hampton In polls (among musicians) asking "which instrument sets the beat for the band or combo?"...the results show #1-Bass, #2-Piano, #3-Drums. This might surprise most non-players since the obvious first thought would be "drums". This indicates the important role of the Bass player as the hub of the rhythm section. Usually considered "side men", their names are not as well known as the great "soloists" of other instruments. Here are some of the Bass greats of jazz. Charles Mingus : Born 1922 in Watts District, Los Angeles; Died 1979 of Lou Gehrig's Disease Mingus was a Double Bass Player; Piano Player; Composer; Vocalist; Arranger; Philanthropis. At his first recordings...to be included among the royalty of King Oliver and Duke Ellington...he dubbed himself "Baron Mingus". Mingus recorded over fifty albums and composed about 300 numbers. He is as well-known for his compositions and arrangements as he is for his playing. In addition to his own bands and combos, Mingus has played with Duke Ellington, Stan Getz, Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie ...just to name a few. His bands ranging in size from three to eleven members included Jimmy Knepper, Booker Ervin, John Handy, Eric Dolphy, Rooland Kirk, Jaki Byard, and Dannie Richmond. A well rounded Jazz musician, Mingus ranks high among the greats.
