Extractions: Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was perhaps the most influential figure in classical music in the last half of the twentieth century. Composer, conductor, author, lecturer and often controversial media personality, the American-born Bernstein had a dramatic impact on the popular audience's acceptance and appreciation of classical music. His own work as a composer, particularly his scores for such Broadway musicals as West Side Story and On the Town, helped forge a new relationship between classical and popular music. For much of his career, including his legendary tenure as music director of the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein recorded exclusively for Columbia/CBS Masterworks, which is now Sony Classical. This vast legacy of recordings, featuring his work as both composer and conductor, is now being remastered and collected in a comprehensive new Sony Classical series entitled Bernstein Century. Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He took piano lessons as a boy and attended the Garrison and Boston Latin schools. At Harvard University he studied with Walter Piston, Edward Burlingame-Hill and A. Tillman Merritt, among others. Before graduating in 1939, he made an unofficial conducting debut with his own incidental music to The Birds and directed and performed in Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock. Then, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, he studied piano with Isabella Vengerova, conducting with Fritz Reiner and orchestration with Randall Thompson. In 1940 he studied at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's newly created
Extractions: of the Beethoven Concertos 3-5 When pianist Krystian Zimerman goes on a North-American concert tour, don't expect to hear him just anywhere. On this year's tour, he made it to all of three cities: Chicago, Toronto and New York. Though the pianist, who turned 40 on December 7, 1996, could fill concert halls in every major city, he simply prefers to limit the number of his performances to about 50 per year. Mr. Zimerman who, according to The New York Times, is "considered one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation", has many other interests which keep him from overextending himself. Fluent in several languages, knowledgeable in history and aesthetics as well as in science and acoustics, he radiates an air of scholarliness and gentility. Yet this is the pianist Leonard Bernstein chose in the late 1980s to be the soloist in his cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic. Intended to conclude his Beethoven orchestral cycle, it was scheduled to be recorded by Unitel and Deutsche Grammophon. One might have expected a more extroverted soloist, but not a young pianist called a "meticulous, sometimes studied aristocrat" ("Classic CD" in a review of the concertos).

Extractions: In honor of the 80th birthday of Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), Classica begins airing a "Bernstein Week" on August 25th. Throughout the week, Classica will be showing programs that document the versatility and fascination of this great conductor, composer, teacher and performer. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on August 25, 1918, Leonard Bernstein became one of the most important personalities in the musical world of the 20th century. After studying music and working as an assistant to Serge Koussevitzky, he made his professional conducting debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1943 when he stepped in to conduct for the ailing Bruno Walter. This was the beginning of a conducting career that led him to the heights of fame. He became the first American-born and trained Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958 and developed long-lasting affiliations with many other orchestras, in particular the Vienna Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic. He also conducted at some of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera. Leonard Bernstein was also widely acclaimed as an interpreter of the works of others and as a composer. A champion of American music, he did much to make the works of Ives and Copland known throughout the world. With his "West Side Story", he set standards for the entire genre of the Broadway musical and often subsequently crossed the lines between light and serious music. Bernstein's dynamic conducting style made his performances unforgettable. His television series "Young People's Concerts" and numerous books introduced millions of people to classical music. Among his many achievements are his two complete recordings of the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, a composer he almost single-handedly re-established in the concert hall.
