Extractions: To find out what most piano performance majors study, you may search the course catalog online at www.lawrence.edu/academics/. Make sure to take note of the special opportunities available to you for an emphasis within the piano performance major. We offer three concentrations: pedagogy, accompanying, and jazz. Should you choose an emphasis, you would fulfill all the course work requirements of a performance major, but use your electives to take additional coursework in your area of particular interest. We have a very active pedagogy program, which involves a great deal of hands-on teaching experience, undertaken in cooperation with our excellent pre-college program at the Lawrence Academy of Music. Our accompanying program benefits from an active opera program, our full-time vocal coach, and coursework in both instrumental and vocal collaboration. And our nationally-known jazz program boasts the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble, the winner of the 2001 Downbeat Magazine College Big Band of the Year Award.

Extractions: The Shows Go On This Fall By Kristin Donnelly The fall season at the Hartke Theatre and the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music are in full swing with a production of Giuseppe Verdis La Traviata playing from Oct. 11 to Oct. 14. Other performances this month include concerts by renowned pianist Boris Berman, CUAs Wind Ensemble, and CUAs Singers Cabaret, as well as a production of the British play, Fen La Traviata is a classic tragedy set in 19 th century Paris, about the love between courtesan Violetta Valéry and her admirer, Alfredo Germont. When Alfredos father begs Violetta to leave his son because her indecent status as a courtesan may hinder the marriage of Alfredos sister, she agrees to do so. The party scene during the second act provides much excitement, with a conflict between a distraught but furious Alfredo, a miserable but reclaimed Violetta, and her new (but also previous) lover, Baron Douphol. The last act is tragic and dramatic as the lovers reunite and see that a future together is impossible. Musical highlights include the drinking song, "Libiam ne' lieti calici'" (Let us drink from wine cups overflowing); Violetta's aria "Addio, del passato" (Farewell to bright visions); and Alfredo and Violetta's duet, "Parigi, o cara, noi lasceremo" (We shall leave Paris, my beloved).
