Extractions: Warren Lee Winner of the 1995 Stravinsky Awards International Piano Competition as well as the "Grand Prix Ivo Pogorelich", Warren Lee is a proud graduate of the Yale School of Music. Since his debut with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of six, he has performed widely in China, England, Germany, France, Canada and the United States. After a performance of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra in Illinois, one critic described him as "a pianist with technique to burn, an extraordinary intellect, and a Horowitzian sense of coloring," adding that "Lee left us all quite stunned." Mr. Lee was awarded the ABRSM full scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 16. Under the expert guidance of Professor Christopher Elton at the Academy, he made such progress that when he played for three piano professors from the Yale School of Music during the 1995 International Summer Piano Institute sponsored by Yale and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the eminent pianist Professor Boris Berman invited him to study with him. Mr. Lee describes his time at Yale as his truly formative years, during which he "grew up to be a musician," and Professor Berman remains his mentor to this day. Mr. Lee returned to the Royal Academy of Music and graduated with First Class Honours in 2000. He is currently enjoying his educator's role as Artist-in-Residence for the Yew Chung Foundation, sharing his passion for music with the next generation.

There is no need for despair. Professor Berman has crystallized his most nourishing ideas in an astonishingly eloquent and lucid manner. " Notes from the Pianists Bench " is his highly informative, rational book of advice geared to the undergraduate and graduate piano student. Unlike those dry and overblown piano methods of early German theorists (Deppe, Breithaupt, Tetzel, Martienssen) Bermans prose is striking a perfect balance between the philosophical and the practical, between the erudite and the anecdotal, the comprehensive and the concise, imagination and realism, elementary and advanced; and it can definitely be comprehended by the educated layman, last not least thanks to the many highly appropriate musical examples.
