Extractions: Danish Classical Music On Record by Knud Ketting The first big flowering of Danish music took place during the reign of King Christian IV (1588-1648). Christian had a healthy appetite for everything in life, including music. He sent the most talented Danish musicians abroad for further education, and hired musicians of European fame to entertain his court and write music for him. Among them were John Dowland and Heinrich Schütz. For some reason or another the music from the court of Christian IV was never well represented on record. So in connection with the 400th anniversary of Christian's accession, a committee was formed with the aim of preparing a music festival and a series of four CDs. Long deliberations were needed (I know because I took part in them) before deciding that the artists needed for the recordings could not be found exclusively in Denmark, and that no Danish recording company could ensure the international distribution needed for such a high profile project. Indeed, today it is perfectly possible to get a quite complete picture of the history of Danish classical and contemporary music from the CD catalogue available internationally. Your starting point could be a dacapo/Marco Polo CD with music from the court of Christian III (1534-59), music that preceeds the CDs mentioned above. You could work your way up to a number of the most important works from the 1990s, including some where the ink is barely dry - or the computer barely cool, one should perhaps say nowadays.

Extractions: Within Danish music he is in a class by himself. By virtue of his originality and his mastery, by virtue of the voluminous chronicle of works and - the interwoven norm-disrupting, at times almost surrealistic, sideline activities. A red thread does indeed run through the bulk of the sixty years of compositional expressions, but surprising departures and stylistic intermezzi form part of the physiognomy as well. A fact which at times has helped to confuse the outside world and scratch his reputation Nevertheless, the fact is that it all belongs together, large as well as small, significant and less significant, that which is suitable for the concert hall, and that which is more suitable for the Zoo. The traditional middle-class musical life's conception of purified masterpieces like pearls on a string doesn't fit into the picture of the creative Bentzon at all. Rather (as he himself has pointed out), it would be proper to speak of a sequence of production where less substantial works are the prerequisite for the masterpieces to a high degree. Or as he expressed it following the first performance of his 5th symphony: "I set the stage for the major works through the medium of the minor ones. The minor ones are a kind of buffer. It's similar to the way it is with an accumulator. It recharges bit by bit."
Extractions: The Fourth Piano Concerto was premiered by the composer with Erik Tuxen directing the Danish National Radio SO. In this work the Beethoven of Coriolan and the Third Piano Concerto seems held in a suspension of Berg (lyrical persona) and Stravinsky (rhythmic persona - cf also the Fourth Mobile Op. 125). At the end of seventeen minute first movement we catch elusive shades of Vaughan Williams in his best 'bruising' mode. The adagio rhapsodises in an improvisatory manner with a slowly blooming sense of sardonic direction surely part shaped by Shostakovich. The bell-like descents of the second movement can also be discerned in the finale among its rhythmic abundance. Compare the Five Mobiles which flitter around the same starry dissolution limned by the orchestral miniatures of Webern and Schoenberg. These pieces could easily have rested under the title of 'Farben'. The Second, has about it something of nihilism and the abyss. The Third is jewelled and barely holds onto the tatters of tonality launching off where Holst's
