Extractions: Kevin Poe, baritone saxophone The second movement, Acting, used inflected blues rhythms with a hip, very cool, steady wind-up, walking through a tonal scenario, where, mid-way through, a badly muted bass key on the piano halted the performance. Applebaum got up and inspected the inside of the piano, asked the page turner to examine it as well, and then used his cell phone to call someone to fix the problem. An AAA mechanic in a jumpsuit rolled out an electronic keyboard, tried the pedals, connected the keyboard to the grand piano with jumper cables and "jump-started" the piano. The movement ended on a questioning, ascending jazz arpeggio, and the musical tourist is left pondering where creativity would be without technology, and where technology would be without creativity. The remainder of the concert was a delightful and accomplished jazz combo performance by Mark Applebaum on piano, Scott Bauer on trumpet, London Branch on acoustic bass, and Chad Anderson on drums. The combo performed two of Applebaum's pieces: 8 Years, written for his wife on their 8th anniversary, and the frenetic and sparkling Tornado Food. Arrangements of Wayne Shorter's Footprints and Victor Young's Beautiful Love were particularly exquisite, aided by Bauer's mellifluous horn-playing, Branch's fabulously versatile bass-playing, and Anderson's exceptional rhythmic expression. Applebaum's compositions exhibit an unusually broad scope and an engaging fusion of intellect, playfulness, and superb craft.

The Lennie Tristano Experience with his mother, an avocational pianist and opera Arnold Fishkin and alternating drummersHarold Granowsky and Denzil Best Tristano, bauer, Konitz, and http://www.lennietristano.com/biography.htm
Extractions: The history of jazz is written as a recounting of the lives of its most famous (and presumably, most influential) artists. Reality is not so simple, however. Certainly the very most important of the music's innovators are those whose names are known by all Armstrong Parker Young Coltrane . Unfortunately, the jazz critic's tendency to inflate the major figures' status often comes at the expense of other musicians' reputations men and women who have made significant, even essential, contributions of their own, are, for whatever reason, overlooked in the mad rush to canonize a select few. Lennie Tristano is one of those who have not yet received their critical due. In the mid-'40s, the Chicago-born pianist arrived on the scene with a concept that genuinely expanded the prevailing bop aesthetic. Tristano brought to the music of Charlie Parker and Bud Powell a harmonic language that adapted the practices of contemporary classical music; his use of polytonal effects in tunes like "Out on a Limb" was almost

Aurelio De La Vega Professional Activities Other months in the Calendar are dedicated to violinist Jascha Heifetz, pianistHarold bauer, educator Nadia Boulanger, soprano Geraldine Farrar, conductor http://www.e-universe.com/lmfhome/delaveganews.htm
Extractions: S ummarizing the work of a composer as vigorously curious as Aurelio de la Vega is not easy. Serialism and pantonality, Cuban dance rhythms and chance operations, graphic notation and electronic tape, all have interested De la Vega, and have come together in a powerful and idiosyncratic musical personality. Somewhat to the composer's surprise, however, his collected music for solo piano seems satisfyingly to sum up his evolution, particularly regarding harmonic language and general stylistic stance. That body of music10 works from 1944 to 1987will be played by Martha Marchena this afternoon at Cal State Northridge, where De la Vega was on the faculty for 34 years. "I have never heard these pieces all played together," De la Vega says, before Marchena played the same program three weeks ago at the University of Miami. "I am not easy to please and I hear my music very objectively in performance, but this was very satisfactory. The impact was profoundkind of a canvas of 50 years of music. She really takes it seriously, and the results were beyond my imagination." Marchena, a Cuban American pianist who has already recorded two discs of Latin American music, takes the program to the Smithsonian in June, then on to three more venues this year, including the Music Department of Kean University, New Jersey, Thurs. Oct. 11, 2001, before recording the collection in December. There are also performances in Chicago and Cleveland lined up for 2002. The composer will be present at most of the performances.
