The Governor's School for the Arts is a four week residential summer school for outstanding Virginia student artists. The school is funded by the State Department of Education and tuition is free for those students selected to at tend. The director of the school is Chuck Hayes, a theater professor at Radford University; Mark Camphouse, Director of Bands at Radford, is associate director. This summer there were 123 students from throughout Virginia enrolled in programs of Music, Dance, Theater, and Visual Art. Forty five of these students were music students. The music curriculum of the Governor's School included two 45 minute private lessons each week, chamber music per formance and coaching, music theory and literature classes, interdisciplinary arts classes, faculty and student recitals, master classes, and special sessions on conducting, music therapy, irnprovisatory technique, and music education. This summer, internationally known concert pianist Leon Bates was in residence and gave master classes for all music students.

Everything from the Saturday sessions, to the master classes, to the student performances, to Midnight Madness, to Bill Iveys speech, to the showcases, to the delightful smorgasbord of sessions seemed to delight this record-breaking crowd.
