Extractions: Leon Bates Pianist Leon Bates welcomes the millennium with plans that include recordings, performing new works and continued joy in performing for audiences the world over. Since winning the Philadelphia Orchestra Senior Auditions as a student over 20 years ago, Leon Bates has emerged as one of America's leading pianists. He is invited to the most prestigious concert halls and his performances have warranted critical and audience accolades in Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center, Philadelphia's Academy of Music, the Hollywood Bowl and the Masonic Hall in San Francisco. He appeared in Naples, Italy in two recitals and took part in the filming of "Music in the 20th Century" telecast on PBS. He has also hosted a radio series funded by the Pew Foundation, entitled "Notes from Philadelphia." Although he has performed numerous times with orchestras in Carnegie Hall, the 2001-02 season marks his Carnegie Hall recital debut. Leon Bates' work with young people is extraordinary. In one season alone he often performs over fifty residency programs in conjunction with orchestra engagements and recitals to inspire, motivate and delight America's youth as he opens their minds and hearts to the love of music. In addition to a full concert schedule, Mr. Bates is a master teacher and often is called upon to give master classes to promising young musicians. Known for his ability to attract audiences, he is a favorite on college campuses because of his broad interests outside of classical music. He enjoys all the performing arts, including dance, theatre and all types of music. He is a sports enthusiast and a disciplined body builder, which he feels aids his playing ability. Recently he has begun composing, and finds great satisfaction in this aspect of music making. Mr. Bates has recorded on the Orion label, Performance Records, and on Naxos.

Extractions: CAMDEN, NJ-Michael Feinstein, the pianist-singer and savior of all things Gershwin, will open the Fleet Season 2002-2003 at The South Jersey Performing Arts Center at the Tweeter complex on the Camden Waterfront. Accompanied by a talented group of local musicians, Feinstein, one of the top interpreters of the popular American song, will perform a variety of classics on Wednesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. Michael Feinstein has been a household name ever since the success of his one-man Broadway show Isn't It Romantic in 1988. His 2002 release, Michael Feinstein with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, a special event directed by Zubun Mehta, marked the first time that the singer-pianist has recorded with a symphony orchestra. His widely diverse recordings range from romantic balladry to big band jazz. Michael Feinstein started playing piano by ear when he was five. "I loved the music that my parents listened to rather than what was on the radio at the time. I was very enamored with show music and I listened to a lot of the music that I now perform." Feinstein began performing as a teenager, playing at weddings and parties in Columbus, Ohio.

Extractions: With subtle humor, remarkable lyricism, and great passion pianist Leon Bates firmly established himself as a real master musician in the all-Mozart program with which the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra opened its current indoor season, as they call it, at the First Congregational Church Saturday evening. An interesting aspect of the program was that all three works were scored for the true chamber-sized group of strings with minimal winds. The Symphony No. 17 in G Major, K. 129 was crisply articulated and cleanly played, with an especially expressive account of the slow movement ( andante ). The addition of a fourth movement, interpolating a movement from the Symphony No. 16 in C Major, K. 128 ahead of the original finale, did not in my opinion serve this performance well. It made the first half of the concert have an appropriate length, but musically I think it would have been better to have nothing, since the more usual minuet with trio was missing. The Symphony No. 29 in A Major, K. 201
