The Prize Winner - Leon Django Bates leon Django bates Photo . British pianist, keyboard and tenor horn player, bandleader, and composer. http://www.jazzpar.dk/Prize_Winners/leon_django_bates.html
Extractions: British pianist, keyboard and tenor horn player, bandleader, and composer. Born Beckenham, Kent, UK, on the 2nd of October 1960. Django Bates was the second non-American and the second Englishman to receive The JAZZPAR Prize. In 1997 he was also the second-youngest winner, David Murray beating him by only a few months. On the whole, the selection of Bates was in perfect agreement with The Prize Criteria, two JAZZPAR goals being to manifest openness to age as well as to nationality. His Music During the late 70s Django Bates came to the fore as a prominent representative of a new ambitious generation on the British jazz scene. His extremely catholic efforts both as an instrumentalist and composer reflect not only inspiration from almost the whole of jazz history - they also transcend barriers of style and genre as well to include elements of e.g. African and other ethnic music, Motown, and European art music, both classicism and modernism. Bates has demonstrated a deep understanding of even the finer nuances of all this.

Extractions: Every year, the Network for New Music hosts a fund-raising gala featuring an eminent composer discussing their works, followed by a short recital. Whether by chance or by design, many of these composers have had a prominent Philadelphia connection. Milton Babbitt was an undergrad at Penn, and Jacob Druckman grew up here. George Rochberg taught at Penn for many years. Bernard Rands was the Philadelphia Orchestra composer in residence. This year, the honored guest will be Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker, whose local claim to fame is having been the first black graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, in 1945. He continued his doctorate work at the Eastman School. As befits the product of these two vaunted, but conservative institutions, Walker is a composer in the grand manner. His beautifully crafted, deeply lyrical music can easily be considered in the company of Barber, Hanson and Copland; it is distinctively stamped as American music For the Network gala, pianist Leon Bates, who was a star pupil of one of Walker's great champions, the late Natalie Hinderas, will perform the Sonata No. 2 for Piano. He will also accompany soprano Martha Elliott in a performance of the Emily Dickenson Songs. Guests can chat with the composer and musicians at the cocktail reception that will conclude the evening

Extractions: Jan. 19: Edgar Bateman/Fred Adams. 2 p.m. workshop, 3 p.m. performance, Community Education Center, 3500 Lancaster Ave., 387-1911. Fred Adams is a playful open-minded brass man who gigged for 12 years with spaceman Sun Ra and his Arkestra and is the brass instructor/coach for the Clef Club's Youth Jazz Ensemble. Drummer Edgar Bateman is an innovative polyrhythmic monster; a cross between William Hooker, Bill Bruford and Max Roach. Bateman's credits include gigging with local legend Jamaaladeen Tacuma plus touring and recording with lesser lights like John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy and Lee Morgan. With on-the-spot interpretation from actress Matt Rochester (from Freedom Theatre) and backing from saxophonist Terry Lawson, bassist Mikal Saunders, percussionist Frank Williams and guitarist Calvin Nathaniel, the afternoon promises to be a learning free-for-all. Jan. 19: Celebration with Terence Blanchard. As a studious griot of sorts, composer/trumpeter Terence Blanchard has taken traditional jazz ideals and made them blue and intelligently sensual, added twists from another world and stretched them to symphonic proportions with a series of soundtracks and suites surrounding the films of Spike Lee. This opportunity to see the magical Blanchard in such intimate surroundings should not be missed.

Drop In On Gershwin at the Redlands Bowl, August 17 "Everyone always asks for Gershwin," says Joann Rile, management for "A Gershwin Party", the Friday, August 17, 8:15 p.m. event for the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. So, she added, two singers and a pianist created a program celebrating the vocal and piano music of legendary American composer, George Gershwin. Recognizing the long-time American love affair with Gershwin's distinctive, listenable music, pianist Leon Bates, soprano Louise Toppin, and tenor William Brown will play and sing music from a program list that includes "Rhapsody in Blue", "Fascinatin' Rhythm", "The Man I Love", "Strike up the Band", and "Porgy and Bess". Bates, Toppin, and Brown have toured this program for three years, performing the light, relaxed concert in large halls and small churches all over the country. The purpose, according to Rile, was to re-create the atmosphere one might have found had they dropped in on Gershwin at home.

Pianist Shares Love Of Music With Elementary School Kids Sunday, February 2, 2003 pianist shares love of music with elementary school kidsBy ROBERT BAXTER CourierPost Staff leon bates began studying the piano at http://www.southjerseynews.com/issues/february/f020203c.htm
Extractions: Leon Bates began studying the piano at the age of 6, so he knows all about the discipline and joy music bring into a child's life. And after a concert career of more than two decades, he knows how to ignite a child's interest in music. Bates showed how it's done Tuesday during a lecture demonstration for 200 students at the Cooper's Poynt Elementary School in Camden. "The children are so excited," said principal Sandra Sims Foster before the students filed into the school's cafetorium. "I can't tell you how thrilled we are at having a world- renowned artist perform for our students." With a smile and a wave of his hand, Bates greeted the children before sitting down at the Steinway grand piano.
