Extractions: AMHERST, Mass.Pianist Chonghyo Shin, who teaches piano at Amherst College and heads the piano department at the Brattleboro Music Center, will perform at Buckley Recital Hall at the college on Friday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. The program will include Schumanns Sonata in G minor; Brahmss Intermezzo, op. 117; Liszts Forest Murmurs and The Dance of the Gnomes; Prokofieffs Visions fugitives ; and Chopins Bacarolle and Scherzo in C sharp minor. The concert is free and open to the public. Chonghyo Shin, a native of Seoul, Korea, received both bachelors and masters degrees in music from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she also taught in the preparatory division. She has participated in master classes with Alfred Brendel, Paul Badura-Skoda, and Jeanne-Marie Darré, and also studied privately with Nadia Reisenberg and Stell Anderson. Shin has been a soloist with the Boston Pops, the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra, the New England Conservatory Orchestra and the Windham Community Orchestra. She has given solo recitals and concerts of chamber music throughout New England.
Extractions: When Falla started working on this composition he gave it the title "Nocturnes" which still indicates the atmosphere of the three sections. Most pianists and conductors play the work in a well structured manner and even sometimes with a certain straightforwardness. Curzon and Jorda however work together in a fine tuned atmospheric recording. Jorda is a conductor from the old school and he takes time for phrasing and subtle dynamic variations and so achieves a sense of sultry and mysteriousness, the air bearing heavy scents. It is a rendition which was hardly experienced before (and after, I must say). This performance shows once more all too clear how crucial the cooperation is of all the musicians involved. A true treasure that was well recorded with the piano well embedded in the orchestra. The liner notes of Westminster WL 5075 deal extensively with the structure and the nature of Beethoven's Op. 111 and Op. 2 No. 2. There are however no data about the pianist Kurt Appelbaum with whom Westminster started a complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas. From six discs produced only the one containing Sonatas Nos. 9 and 24 was well received (WL 5090). Westminster apparently abandoned the project and substituted Appelbaum for Paul Badura-Skoda but Demotte says that the wisdom of this choice was to be questioned because Badura-Skoda was much too young.
WBUR Public Arts : February Classical Picks (2003-01-30) The last two items feature the great pianist paul baduraskoda. ListeningIn - February 4 at 8 pm at Pickman Hall, Longy School of Music. http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wbur/arts/pop/article/446982.html
Extractions: by David Weininger In February Boston will see familiar groups and some intriguing new faces. There are some notable chamber music concerts, as well as more rarely heard operas. The following are the events that stood out, at least on paper: Emmanuel Music - February 1 at 7:30 pm at Emmanuel Church. Tickets: $18-100. This long-awaited concert presents "Alfonso und Estrella," perhaps the greatest of Schubert's many neglected operas. The story of a couple who manage to reunite their long-estranged fathers is set to music with Schubert's customary lyric beauty. Emmanuel has only been able to identify one other performance of this work ever, so catch it while you have the chance. Boston Symphony Chamber Players - February 2 at 3 pm at Jordan Hall

Martin Kasik, Pianist Highlights of Czech pianist MARTIN KASIK's 20012002 concert schedule included themasterclasses of Lazar Berman, Eugen Indjic, paul badura-skoda and Christian http://www.yca.org/kasik.html
Extractions: "Mr. Kasik plays with a resourceful technique, fluidity, a keen sense of color and intelligence. It is disarming to experience this serious young man with his delicate manner as he plays with such emotional involvement and pianistic care." "His performance of Bach's French Suite No. 6 was lively, buoyant and lyrical. Mr. Kasik is especially drawn to the Romantic repertory. His accounts of four Chopin works were poignant and supple, and in Rachmaninoff's Sonata No. 2, he came into his own. His impassioned, poetic approach served the music well."
Extractions: CHOO Hoey conductor OVERALL NOISE RATING: (As usual, respiratory interjections from the audience during pianist's encores.) The Noise Rating Index is a partially objective measurement of pager blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits and other really inapt noises emitted in the concert hall during the music itself. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by Singapore Symphonia Company. by Chia Han-Leon I decided to attend this concert to hear the considerably-lauded Concerto for Orchestra by Lutoslawski, who died only three years ago. Born in 1913, here is a man who lived through some of the most jolting years of human existence, an experience which, I must admit, I'm not extremely keen to share. I also admit that I've never heard the work, so this review is more of a review of a first-time encounter with Lutoslawski and "one of [his] most accessible works" (according to the programme notes). The dark, pounding beginning reminded me of Brahms's first, with a forbidding theme on the celli, interspersed with flashes of light as the music climbs its way through the higher strings. What struck me as interesting were these "flashes of light" among the darker strains of the score these form a shifting wave of light and dark modes, constantly modulating. The movement builds up its material to several climaxes before ending quietly with the chiming "ding... ding..." of bells. Whizzing, insect-buzz like string writing begins the next movement; the composer's bold orchestration returning via the brass before the movement ends with strings

Extractions: As lay people, we can find expert comments on the works of classical music in books, periodical publications and in CD brochure comments. These may be rendered from a variety of viewpoints: from that of the biographer, that of the musicologist, that of the music critic or that of the active musician. Here, with respect to Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, first of all, I want to list the relevant literature that I found in the bibliographical listings of the books I consulted in creating this section. Besides Thayer's standard biography, the authors I consulted are, in alphabetical order: Barry Cooper (Beethoven: 2000), Joachim Kaiser (Die 32 Klaviersonaten Beethovens und ihre Interpreten: 1975), William Kinderman (Beethoven: 1995) und Maynard Solomon (Beethoven: 1977 und 1998). The following list is arranged in the alphabetical order of the authors of the works I found and lists the titles of the works written by them, particulars with respect to each publication and by what above-noted authors they have been listed in their respective bibliographical sections. Piano - Unorthodox And Fun Pianist Christopher Finkelmeyer would seem more likely that of a carpenter than a worldclass pianist. JuilliardSchool and Vienna, Austria, where he studied under paul badura-skoda at the http://www.finkelmeyer.com/inperson8.htm
Extractions: There seem to be two kinds of artists one encounters at a classical piano recital: The anguished soul who permits the audience to watch as he is tortured by the music... introverted, sweaty and pained, he finishes his piece beaten, bedraggled, a self-proclaimed martyr to the muse... Or, the extrovert, cocky and arrogant - the intent of his performance to instruct plebeians, scandalize the cognoscenti and declare once and for all the only right way to play. While his pianistic life follows the classic form: child prodigy, honors, awards, prominent teachers, educated abroad... his background: small Wisconsin town, captain of the basketball team, middle son of 5 boys, Father a barber, Mother a homemaker, would seem more likely that of a carpenter than a world-class pianist. And yet, this very simplicity is at the heart of his artistry. Honest, intelligent, intuitive, his playing is, at once, forthright and refined. "Finkelmeyer not only has an outstanding technique, but his playing is virtually without idiosyncrasy, a well-blended amalgam of styles that can only be described as American."

Badura-Skoda claims his "conversion" to the lighter, more fluent action of period instruments came in 1948, after a recital by Isolde Ahlgrimm. The more transparent articulation, the fluid staccato effects he achieves, compensate for the loss of sonorous weight the modern piano provides. I I am particularly impressed by Badura-Skoda in the tricky, often surprising antics of the C Major Sonata, K. 309, where Mozart often trades the top line with its accompaniment, as well as using daring, irregular metric feet. He takes the usually slow, elegant Adagio at a slightly more Andante pace. The broken-style of K. 284 holds a world of digital demands, including stunning orchestral effects, as well as variations that reveal Mozart's own notions of ornaments. The Rondos in these recordings really shimmer, the middle and upper registers of the Schantz keyboard's enjoying a definable 'ping' that sets this recording apart. Besides the immensely spirited Sonata in A, K. 311, an old favorite, the real find in this survey is the little, dark Allegro in G Minor, K. 312 (590d), written around 1790, that has all the imploded fury of the C Minor Concerto, K. 491. Its use of canon clearly hearkens to Mozart's late studies of Bach. This disc is thoroughly musical in every way.

The distinguished Viennese pianist Paul Badura-Skoda is thoroughly at home on the concert grand, but he was also introduced as a young man to the instrument's predecessor, the pianoforte of Mozart's day. There's a distinct, though not drastic, difference in sound. The pianoforte is less resonant but clearer. It also requires a change in playing style, requiring more "delicately articulated, purely digital playing," he says. He demonstrates what he means in this collection of short, non-sonata pieces by Mozart. He plays not on a replica but on an actual 1790 pianoforte that remains in superb condition. It's easy for the listener to make the adjustment; the sound seems perfectly natural for this music. Particularly moving are an adagio (K. 540) and a fantasy (K. 397), but each of the eight pieces has its charms. Also available on two separate discs are collections of Mozart sonatas on the same instrument. - Olin Chism / The Dallas Morning News Search krem.com
