Today however, this magnificent choral work is now firmly established among the composer's best-loved masterpieces. There are now about a half dozen CD versions of the Vespers, of which by far the most popular is this Telarc recording under the direction of Robert Shaw. It's like listening to a disc of Gregorian chant, except that the music clearly draws its roots from Russia rather than Rome. The choral singing and the recorded Telarc sound are both of a superlative quality. 3) Symphonies Nos. 1 to 3; Vladimir Ashkenazy, London Symphony Orchestra / Decca Double Decker 2CDs ($23.00) Order # RA03 Without even taking into account the value of a twofer format, this is the finest CD set of the Rachmaninov symphonies on the market. During the early 1980's pianist Vladimir Ashkenzay turned conductor, producing a number of impressive recordings, most notably the symphonies of Rachmaninov and Sibelius. Even the much-maligned Symphony No. 1 has its moments, while the much more familiar Second and Third symphonies are both served up in scintillating performances and stunning full digital Decca sound. 4) Music for Two Pianos; Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andre Previn / Decca Double Decker 2CDs ($23.00) Order # RA04

Extractions: The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra are playing three distinct contemporary pieces in a cabaret setting. The conductor is Reinbert de Leeuw, one of the best contemporary conductors in the world. Two of the pieces are composed by John adams, who is coming to the Adelaide Festival in 2002, and often works with Peter Sellars (the Artistic Director of the Adelaide 2002 Festival). John Adams is probably best known for the Opera, "Nixon In China". "Grand Pianola" features the duo of Michael Kieran Harvey and Bernadette Harvey-Balkus on piano with vocals, brass and wind instruments. This program will present John Adams the composer, and feature interviews with John Adams and Peter Sellars in the harsh desert environment, which is an inspiration for his work. The second piece by Adams, "Shaker Loops" features strings while "Tubuh Tabuhan", composed by Colin McPhee, is a full orchestral piece. Both these pieces will be straight performance programs.
